well, if your car has a tiptronic, you should chip both computers(ecu+tcu)
the tiptronic chip is around $200.- and is actually real work b/c it has to be soldered.
the ecu chip will be flashed directly.

I'm daily driving a 2.7T with both HP & Torque in high 300's without a TIP chip as have many others. I'd like a TIP chip but to clarify it's an option and not a requirement. The trick is to learn how to drive the car without gear hunting... it's not that hard.
Much more important is a TIP fluid flush & filter change anytime after 100K KMs and sooner if chipped.
