Re: Catalytic Converter Probably Gone- 04' A4 1.8T
Hey geerup,
Was your work covered under the standard Audi warantee or did you have some kind of extended warantee. I'm asking because my car needs an 02 sensor and Mississauga Audi quoted me a cool $660 to do the work. My car is an 04 with 108K's on it. I'd love to have this covered by Audi. Let me know...thanks!

250 and running well? That fuel system cleaner can really make a difference!
Don't forget to do a TBA every couple of weeks also.
As the gunk gets cleared from your system, you have to re-align your throttle body periodically.
I don't think that using conventional oil can contribute to ruining your cat.
That would only contribute to sludge build up.
If you were burning oil because of excessive engine wear, that would eventually ruin a cat.
Keep dosing with the cleaner every two or three tanks (it works out at $3 a tank extra cost, but well worth it) and hopefully the CEL will stay reset.

Hi! Dave,
A TBA is Throttle Body Alignment or adjustment.
This is a necessary maintenance adjustment (I do it religiously every month) to re-align the throttle body mechanism to the length of accelerator stroke. Especially when you have added fuel system treatment, changed plugs, changed oil, etc.
Your Audi shop will do it for $100-$150.
Here is the procedure for free (Try it. It is the real thing!)
1) Turn key on (do not start engine)
2) Push down your accelerator pedal to the floor (max) and hold for 5 seconds
3) Hold and maintain the pedal position while turning the key off
4) Release pedal
5) Wait 2 minutes, then OK to drive
If you listen carefully during the process, you will hear clicks and whirrs coming from under the dash to confirm that the adjustment is taking place.
If you haven't done it before, on completion, you should notice an immediate improvement in acceleration.
That is all there is to it! Straight from the Audi tech service manual.
Let me know how you make out?

If you have the warranty book that came with your car look up the emissions warranties. There should be a section that highlights the 8year/130K Kms to repair or replace free of charge problems with the cat converter, engine electronic control module, and on board diagnostic.

I did it!
It seems great. I will let you know once I drive a bit more, but so far seems like it is peppier
Could it also improve my gas mileage?
Thanks!

Re: Catalytic Converter Probably Gone- 04' A4 1.8T
So I checked the manual and it says:
For 8 years or 130,000 kilometers:
...Your dealer will replace free-of-charge the following major emissions control components only:
- Catalytic Converter
- Engine Electronic Control Module
- On Board Diagnostic Device
So I guess I'm out of luck with the O2 Sensor....

Re: Catalytic Converter Probably Gone- 04' A4 1.8T
It should improve you gas milage slightly because gas consumption is impacted by engine performance and tuning.
You just tuned your throttle body which will sych intake efficiency, etc.
Keep an eye on your consumption and let me know.
It will definitely be peppier.
Remember to make it part of your maintenance routine, say bi-weekly.

Try the fuel system cleaner (Xtra concentrated) for the O2 sensor before you replace it.
My buddy had a bimmer with an O2 sensor CEL and they wanted $300 to replace it the sensor.
Two shots of fuel system cleaner, no CEL anymore (he silently thumbed his nose at the stealership!).
