Hello I'm new to the forum, and looking at purchasing the following 2001 A4 Quattro 1.8T, Tiptronic trans from craigslist for $4700. (See attached pics. It wont let me post the link since i'm a new member)
1.8L turbo 4-cyl engine All Wheel Drive Automatic transmission with Tiptronic 139K miles 17 - Inch Allow Wheels, tires very good about 75%, ABS Automatic dual-zone climate control Power windows and locks Glass Sunroof with power, tilt and slide Cruise Control Leather seats with heated front seats AM/FM radio with single CD No warning lights, no leaks Any thoughts? Comments/Concerns? Is there anything in particular I should know about this particular generation of the A4? Anything to be concerned with on the 1.8T? Tiptronic trans? Mileage concerns (139k miles)? I'm just looking for general buying advice and info about the reputation of this vehicle. I've read quite a few reviews but I can't seem to pinpoint anything specific so I thought I would ask some experts. ;) Thanks guys for any help you can give me! |

Get as much info about whatever maintenance has been; check all the electrical bits work; look for any signs of oil or coolant leaks, unusual transmission noises while driving or changing gears.
All normal stuff to watch for with any older used vehicle - remember it's 11-12 yrs old now so there will always be something that will need repair sometime soon. After buying do a change of oil and coolant so you know what state they are in. Also make sure brakes are working properly. All the best with whatever you decide to purchase. |

Get a good mechanical done from a mech that you know if you can. It's getting old so there will be things to fix. Big one ....... TIMING BELT, find out when it was done. 139 kms would require it to be changed soon if it's not already. Considering the age, it's probably been done but find out for sure. Clunking/squeaking in the front end when driving....control arms failing. (common) Like a4audi4fun said, change the fluids so you know they are good and then you'll have a set point where to start maintaining it from. As long as it get a good bill of health you should be ok. I had a 97 (same model as this one, b5) and I ran it hard to 283kms then sold it it good working order. So potentially you'll have a lot of life in that one.
Good luck. |
