Hello Mikey!
I checked the Mobil 1 website to locate a point of sales in Montreal as I was never able to find 0W40...finally found a place downtown selling 6 x 1L for $64+tx
This was before I knew that it was not 100% synthetic

I finally found via a google search and a small local parts shop under the name Frisco who sold me a 5L jug of Lubro Moly for get this: $35!

$35..... Fantastic.

I went to NAPA this morning and they quoted me $90 plus per 5L jug. I'm going to have to get you some cash and have you purchase some for me. My car takes 9.5 L so two jugs for sure. Am planning on a weekend in Tremblac sometime soon. You game?

It's either that thing or a bus mind you it is a Freestar SPORT edition lolllllllllllllll I appreciate even more my Awdi
It is not your common Windstar as it gets a 4.2L engine rated at a whooping 200hp and drives like a bus. I do not even dare pushing the rpm above 2,000 rpm unless I have a gas station at every exit

Anytime!

I got a couple of pm's asking me what do I mean by saying that Mobil1 & Castrol Syntech even the one made in Germany not being 100% synthetic. So here goes:

To be considered a 'fully-synthetic oil' an oil must have at least 39% synthetic oil. Oils like Castrol, Mobil1, and other 'name-brand' oils use only about 45% synthetic oil (generally, this is not a 100% fact), and the rest is conventional oil. On the other hand, products like Royal Purple, Pentosin, LubroMoly, Total Quarts 9000, Amisol, Motul all use over 90% synthetic oil, with only 10% or less of conventional oil.

It isn't that Mobil 1 is a bad oil in any way, they just only go up to the minimum oil rating, whereas some of the more expensive oils go above and beyond what is asked of them by the Oil Industry.

Castrol Syntec is a Group III oil...

Group III Made through hydroprocessing and refining, Group III base oils are subjected to the highest level of mineral oil refining of the base oil groups. Although they are not chemically engineered, they offer good performance in a wide range of attributes, as well as good molecular uniformity and stability. They are commonly mixed with additives and marketed as synthetic or semi-synthetic products. Group III base oil products have become more common in America during the past decade.

Mobil 1 has always been listed as a Group IV full synthetic in discussions over the years. Have they changed it to a Group III?

Honnestly I do not know anymore...
I just commute and never really push the car to the limit like drag racing, full throttle...etc
However having a 1.8T with 21,000km now I have educated myself and have chosen LubroMoly fully sunthetic for half the price of Mobil1 especially after realizing some potential facts which may be true but not for sure, heck why even bother and risk it then ?

Mobil = Exxon...Do I need to elaborate more lol
I do believe Mobil 1 now contains Group III oils.
And remember Mobil only says "full synthetic" which may mean use of Group III oils.
Anyway, Mobil is suspiciously quiet. I guess after bashing everybody for years for not fully synthetic oils they joined the club
As far as I am concerned, the longevity of an oil is determined by its additive package, whereas its flow characteristics in extreme heat and cold is based on its synthetic vs conventional properties. So if I were to think of "how many miles" I could go without changing the oil, I would consider the overall additive package (like Mobil's supersyn) but if I was constantly starting the car in -30F weather or 120F stop and go traffic, then the "synthetic" element would factor in as well. Finally
"Synthetic" therefore is not better by virtue of being "synthetic"; but it is definitely better than "natural" by virtue of being uniform and consistent in quality and final performance.

To each his own as long as you make your OWN decision...

Just a quick comment here: yes, castrol syntech is group III hydrocracked "fake" synthetic.... With the exception of German castrol. In europe you can not call group III synthetic, and also, by nature, 0w30 is a difficult viscosity to make, and by nature requires a high percentage of group IV PAO. German castrol 0w30 is a true fully synthetic oil.

I too like full synthetic in winter for it's cold start advantage over other oils. If I can find find Lubro Moly locally I'll use it, but it seems to be only priced at the high end around Vancouver. Anybody know of decent pricing here?

I did a quick google and it seems the question about Mobil switching to Group III base has been going on for several years now! I thought it was just a recent thing. There is a lot of speculation but nothing conclusive it seems. If it were just a rumour, I'm sure Mobil/Exxon would be publishing details to support that it's group IV, but you don't see this. I wonder if the price has come down to Syntec levels.
