B6 Transmission Engine Seal (Gasket) leak
Hey guys,
Just picked up a B6, and I'm madly in love with her although we've only had a short stint.
Question is, lately I've noticed a leak on the driveway, and I took her in for an oil change at Mr.Lube, and the mechanic (not sure if he is/isn't but he was in the bay underneath so lets call him one) said that I Have a heavy leak in the gasket between the transmission and engine.
I noticed a few oil spots on the parking floor at my apartment before the incident, and after the oil change, they are much smaller in diamater and less frequent.
I've checked the obvious:
- leaks in the oil filter (dry around the area)
- leaks by the dip stick (dry)
- head gasket, etc
Was just wondering if this is a common problem? I was told it is common to Audi and BMW's, but this explanation didn't make sense.
Planning to bring into a mechanic to get it checked out obviously, just wanted some member input and past experiences.
Much respect to all in advance.

Re: B6 Transmission Engine Seal (Gasket) leak
If it is engine oil and it's leaking from the between the engine and the transmission bell housing, it's likely the rear main seal that's gone. Be sure to check that the leak isn't originating from somewhere higher up on the engine, and just running down to the bottom of the bell housing.
If it is the rear main seal, it's a cheap part, but a labour-intensive job. Consider changing your clutch at the same time, since it would be no extra labour. Also think about a clutch upgrade if you're considering doing any power mods in the future. The front and rear main seals are known to leak on VAG vehicles.
