2002 Audi A4 1.8T (manual) that has just had an engine rebuild. Now one of the simplest jobs is just not going well. Any tips on how to get the engine up close and personal with the gearbox would be appreciated.

I have the engine on a hoist and controlled with a load leveller. The gearbox is supported by a jack and the car is on its wheels on the ground.

I can get the engine very close and the spindle is in the clutch plate hole.

If I jack the gearbox up too high, the engine fouls on the firewall. Too low and it fouls on the mounting points. IN between and it just will not push on far enough.

There must be a simple way of doing this.

Did you have to dissasemble or replace the clutch? If so, is the clutch disk aligned?

If it's the splines in the clutch that is interfering, suggest to put the car in gear with parking brake on and slowly turn engine crank shaft by front crank bolt to complete clutch alignment.

I got it.

Pull engine away from car, remove clutch (new part), test fit friction plate to gerabox and there you have it... wrong part. It doesn't fit and will never fit. It's too small.

Note to self... always, always test fit new parts before assembly !!!!
