Default 2005 Audi A4 trunk opens when key is turned off

Hello all, I am new to the forum. I have a problem with a 2005 Audi A4. Car belongs to a friend of mine. Problem is everytime you turn off the key (shut the car off) the trunk pops open. Takes anywhere from 1 - 3 seconds. This is very annoying obviously. I have searched for quite some time on the net and can't seem to find the answer to this. I have never seen a problem like this come in to my shop either. She had a new key programmed to the car before Christmas, and this all started 2-3 weeks after that. I don't know if that is related to this problem in anyway or not. Is there a setting that I can change with the vag-com (or vag 1552) to get rid of this? She says the problem occurs with both keys and it happens every single time. Just started out of the blue apparently. Anyone ever experience something like this, and if so what was the fix? Thanks very much guys, and if this has been covered before I apologize.

Cheers

Derek

I saw a guy on the VW forum that was saying something similar... just not with the turning the car off problem... he said it openend randomly...

Someone said spraying the mechanism with WD40 helped...

I am assuming you tried with different keys and stuff to make sure something isnt wrong with the FOB? try the vallet key and see if it does the same thing...

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yes, we have tried with both keys. Unfortunately the car does not have a valet key, and I am pretty sure she isn't going to want to spent another couple hundred dollars to have a valet cut and programmed. Like I mentioned this all started out of the blue. Thought about maybe broken wires in the door or something, but doens't seem to make any difference with the door open or closed. Its almost like some setting has been changed in one of the modules. Thanks again for your input, greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Derek

Alright guys and gals,

I do believe I have solved the issue with this audi. Finally got it in my shop today for a service and a whack of new interior parts , but that is another story. Anyways, had to drive the car around town for some errands before going home and 95% of the time when I shut off the key the trunk would pop. You could even turn the key to the run position and back off and it would keep trying to open the trunk even though it was open. When I got it home and in the shop it tried to open itself 4 times after I had shut the key off and was on the bench. After a lot of tearing, swearing and almost (felt like almost) breaking some screws to get the trunk lid liner off I pulled the entire wiring harness out of the trunk lid looking for breaks and found none. As soon as I plugged the 4 pin connector back in for the trunk release handle the trunk would pop again. Now it is also valuable to note that the trunk release handle would not open the trunk (really just a microswitch under the rubber button/handle) before I started all this work. I pulled the entire handle/license light assembly from the trunk and then pulled the switch and "printed circuit" piece off of the rubber "handle" and license light socket part. The microswitch and printed circuit also contain the contacts for the license lights. That's where the 4 pins come in, 2 for trunk microswitch and 2 for license lights. The entire assembly is separated by removing 2 screws and a couple of plastic clips. With the assembly in two pieces the trunk would not pop itself and the release handle button would work. As soon as I reassembled the two halves and the license light holders made contact with the printed circuit the trunk would pop itself and the handle switch would quit working. The "printed circuit", if you can call it that (really just copper traces totally covered in plastic) was warped and cracked in spots from the heat of the license lights. I figure that the heat and cracking has caused the traces to cross somewhere under the plastic and everytime the key was turned on (lights come on) and shut off (lights turn off) caused a signal to be sent to the trunk pop motor and the trunk to pop. Central convenience saw this as an implausible signal (got a code for this 00892) and in turn would not let the button pop the trunk? I am not sure. For now I cut the traces for the license lights, cut the wires about 3 inches back from the 4 pin plug and wired the license lights to the wires direct. We have decided to try this first and if it fixes the problem (which it seems to have so far, as the button is working and the trunk is not opening itself) then maybe, just maybe we will let the dealer rape us for $190 CAD for the entire trunk switch/license light assembly. Or we could leave it as it is and call it fixed. Either way, I think I have put the poltergeist to bed on this one. If anyone wants pics of the pieces I am talking about, lmk and I will post or pm them. Sorry for the long winded reply and I hope this helps someone in the future. I can't believe I am the only person to ever see something like this though The cracking and warping leads me to believe this is a much more common problem. Thanks to the person who relied and thanks to all who read this!

Thanks for taking the time to record the solution you found. If you can take some pics next time that will assist in following along and also help others.

Hope you hang around here on the forum.
