2004 A4 3.0L - confusing whining noise
so im getting a whining or groaning noise from the front of the car when im driving.. when i turn the steering wheel it gets twice as loud....this leads me to believe somethings up with my power steering....HOWEVER... i also get the same whining noise when i drive in a straight line, not as loud, and usually under low RPMs, and it sounds like its rpm dependant (changes pitch as rpms go up and down)... can this still be the power steering? i checked the fluid and its fine, oh and the sounds does NOT go away after the car warms up.
any ideas?

Re: 2004 A4 3.0L - confusing whining noise
Cavitation is occuring inside power steering pump due to air entering the system. If the rack is failing, PS fluid may be seen weeping around tie rod boot(s) and letting air enter. Another common cause with no fluid leak is a loose clamp on the low pressure return line that lets air in when temps go below freezing as fluid is now thicker.

I have the same model/year and have had a similar reoccuring whining approx 25k. I swap out the old p/s fluid with new and it's fine. give that a try before being talked into a major expense.
