ok here is my problem....bought an A4 that dealer said motor was blown....the fella that i got the car from took the car in and for $200.00 the dealer said new motor required....how i have no idea i am quite sure that lifting the hood at a dealer would cost that.....anyway....
ok so when i start the car the amount of smoke coming out of exhaust is like WOW...so here is what i did...i removed the turbo line to the intake and found oil not a lot but not a little....did a compression test and found 140 140 150 and 160 front to back....the compression is not like way bad so i am lead to believe that the engine itself is good and the smoke is from the turbo????
my next step is to figure out a way to test the oil pressure with a real gauge to determine if the oil pump is gone.....
am i thinking right that it could be the turbo i do not have a lot of experience with these but logic tells me if it bad and dumping oil and air under pressure to the intake volia this is the problem not the engine......

kinda sounds like a bad turbo, when a turbo blows youll know it, shell smoke like a **** and youll get no boost. Get a boost guage hook er up. Sounds like oil seals to me... But thats jsut me its hard to tell over the net. Any others?

It's normal for there to be a little oil in the intake line, as the crancase breather line connects to the intake hose from the airbox right before the turbo inlet.

It is possible for the tubine side of the tubo to be leaking oil into the exhaust pipe though.

it may not need a new engine, but it could very well be a head gasket. what colour is the smoke? more white, or more blue. that will help if its rad fluid or oil.

How much mileage do you have on it? did the dealer say what exactly they thought was wrong with the engine?

If i had this problem, here's what i think I'd do to diagnose if the oil is coming from the turbo :

First- pull the plugs- if they are badly fouled with carbon, you are burning oil, if its light colored crap on them, its coolant leaking from the head, if they're clean, the turbo is leaking directly into the exhaust.

A head gasket leak will also allow exhaust into the coolant and easy to tell if you open the coolant overflow right after a run - coolant will be dirty, smoky and smell of exhaust.

If you suspect the turbo is leaking into the intake, i'd get a 1-1/2"x2" plastic pipe elbow from the local hardware store ( the kind with 2 make barbs for poly pipe) disconnect the turbo compressor hoses and bypass them together with the elbow. there's not much room but you should have just enough to do it.
Then use a 1-1/2" temporary ABS pipe cap (test cap) to protect the turbo intake.
Then jam the wastegate open with an appropriate length stick along the actuator rod, to keep the turbo from coming on and overspeeding.
put a white sheet of plastic under the turbo and start the engine and run it for a couple of minutes. if there's oil getting on it from the tubo outlet, you found the problem.

Regardless what the cause is, expect to have to change the catalytic converter and its 2 oxygen sensors too.
