Standard Tire Size

I have a quick question I have 16" rims and the tires I have on them need to be changed. Someone said that the tires I had are to small. The size is 205/55/16. Is he wrong or is there a standard size for audi 16" rims.

I drive a 2004 Audi

Any help would be greatful

Re: Standard Tire Size

The B5 had that tire size but Audi went with slightly wider tires for the B6 and B7's. 205's work but 215/55/16 would be the appropriate size.

If you want, you could go to a lower profile wider tire and still maintain the same diameter thus not affecting your speedo and ABS system.

Cheers !

Thanks. I am going to go with 215/55/16 then since B6's usually have those tires.

On that same note, I have a couple of questions if you don't mind?
I just picked up my '00 A4 2.8QT that has the Performance, Winter and Convenience options. It too has the 16" 10 spoke wheels with 205/55 16's which I believe are on 16x7 rims. Is there a bit meatier tire size I can go to without tainting the speedo, ABS or traction features? I understand outside diameter is the caveat here, but don't know if it's such a viable idea and if so what are my options?

Second, the dealer has a set of used winter rims available (steel I would assume). What size tire would be most applicable since I'm from the old school that the narrower the tire the better for winter conditions?
Many thanks,
John

Re: Standard Tire Size

If you're not lowered then sure you could go with a wider tire; however, a 7" wide wheel will be limiting (most tires have a recommended wheel width). To keep the same diameter, use this Calculator You can see a 225/50/16 would be a good match in size and provide lots of meat to the road. :-)

Absolutely go with a narrower contact patch for winter traction. The tire calculator will help you with this as well. Are the steelies 15's ? If so, 195/65/15 would be the appropriate size for tires and provides a very affordable good winter setup.

Cheers !

BTW, there are lots of options for "winter rims" ... I picked up a used set of Audi OEM 5 spoke alloys for $200. for my last car. You have lots of time to deal with this. Check the classifieds on here, Audizine and Audiworld and ask around ... Patience is a virtue !

Here's what my 5 spokes looked like ...
