Paint Thickness

I've been reading around that OEM paint thickness is about 4.5 - 5 mils.

Does anyone know if this is true for all cars for every year of every colour?

Anybody with a silver '04 A4 ever gotten the thickness measured by a PTG?

Re: Paint Thickness

You sure you have that right? 4.5-5mils, as in millimeters?
That seems like a pretty thick coat of paint. I dont think the body panels are even that thick!?

Did I miss something here?

Just a bit of a correction......1 millimeter is 0.0393700787 inches or 1000/meter. I think you were thinking meters Cheeba, but your fingers were thinking inches!!

Nope, a mil is not the same as a millimetre; a mil is another term for a thousandth. Paint is indeed measured in thousands of an inch.

Also, take note that the Imperial system sucks! :D Conversions in Metric can all be done simply in your head.

I have been educated today. A mil is indeed 1/1000 of an inch or 0.00254mm. Thanks for the lesson in measurement.
