Question Opinion requested on repair estimate 2002 Audi 1.8 quattro

Hi
I just took my car to a mechanic.
This is a mechanic that was recommended to me and specializes in audi.

He dId the work I requested which was:
1)new brakes and rotors all around,
2) new power steering rack,
3) 2 new tie rod ends,
4)vc vvt gasket,
5)replaced fog light
The above is 1500 which I think is fair. Do you ?

He came back to me and said it also needs:
1) front flex lines and brake fluid - 200
2) rear stabilizer links - 250
3) 2 breather hoses 100
4) propt shaft seal and fluid -140

As I do not really know this mechanic, I am curious what your thoughts are
How can I verify that this additional work was really required
These additional items are not items that I see on these forums much.

Thanks

I am no expert but you would pay at least double that if not more at the dealer. If you can consult another independant mechanic
Brakes alone I was quoted $1400 for 4 discs and pads. I purchased my OEM Zimmerman discs and Okebono Ceramic pads (90% less brake dust & improved stopping power) from Auto Parts way canada and had them installed paying only labor to my independent audi garage.

This quote for this work seems pretty reasonable to me...

that all looks very reasonable, if your capable, maybe DIY some of it to save some coin, the brake hoses, stab links and breather hoses are very easy diys, the prop shaft seal is a little more involved.

If your doing breather hoses, I'd spend a little more coin and get the 034motorsport kit, since I had done some of mine I just opted for the block breather hose and new pcv valve, its a very nice piece and I don't have to worry about it needing to be changed in another 100k

You may be able to replace the 2 breather hoses yourself depending on where they are located. The rest you will have to pay for but more importantly, HOW DOES THE CAR SOUND, FEEL AND HANDLE?

If the answer to this is. It all sounds feels and handles well then that's a sure fire sign that you can hold off on the repairs till you have the time and cash for it. It doesn't sound to me like the mechanic is trying to make money off you as these things are regular wear and tear parts and he's just telling you what he has seen. No doubt it is an upsell but a good upsell in my opinion. None of these things sound like they need immediate attention so shop around if you want a better price.

Hi
Thanks for your suggestions.
I did get the work completed by the mechanic .
He seems really great!
When I picked my car up he was beaming...he couldn't wait to see my reaction.
We took it for a drive and ...what a difference !

Drives better and better fuel economy

I am very pleased. I will use this mechanic going forward .

Was going to get a newer model but now, I guess I better keep my car now and enjoy it .
