Need a Glove Box door

Hi Guys,

One of the hinges on my glove box snapped in half today. It closes okay, but it's pretty much done in. The dealer was gracious enough to offer to sell me a door for my glove box for $385. But I was wondering if anyone has some info on how I can find a used one.

Thx!

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Was that $385 for a hinge or the whole door?

PwrDriftr 09-14-2010 01:34 PM

Re: Need a Glove Box door

It was for the whole door. I thought the hinges were built into the door. At least it looked that way to me. If I could just buy the hinge, I would love that. Right now, I'm going to look into fixing it.

How about a scrapyard? Maybe you can find a totalled vehicle with intact glove box?

Thank you. I'm going to try that this weekend. There's no way I'm spending $385 for a new door. :-)

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Go to frisco auto parts, I think they have it there. Ask for the used parts area.
It's hard to find audis in a scrapyard.

It is a very simple job, and you can't tell the difference from the outside of the glove box. When i reattached the hinge that broke i added a bracket onto the unbroken hinge as well for added support.

Hey PwrDriftr!

To commiserate, my hinge went also.

Same $2.00 bracket fix, except I added a chain restricter to take the weight when the box lid is open.

We should do a poll and see how many have had the same problem.

I love my Audi, but the accessories are not too robust.
Like my broken glove box hinge, cup holder, business card holder box, centre arm rest hinge, rear arm rest latch.

Hoe you do the fix OK!

Re: Need a Glove Box door

These glove boxes are poorly designed. Articles can get caught between the door and the dash near the hinge. If you don't know about this, applying extra pressure to close the door snaps the hinge.

Funny I just came here and to ask the exact same question :o

I have an '05 and a buddy has an '06 that did the same thing.

Something strange me thinks....

Re: Need a Glove Box door

This is a well known problem, and pretty well documented if you google it. There are fixes out there, some better then others.

When my glove box hinge was cracked, I was going to do the repair trick, but after it snapped completely, I figured the fix it wouldn't hold properly, and I know the thought of it not being 100% would really bother me. Yeah, I'm **** that way!

After a bit of searching and ebay window shopping, I found a company in the UK that sells the Glove box door brand new. It was received in 3 days from UK to Canada, and cost me only $175 CDN including Fedex shipping.

Sure some may say its expensive, but compared to the taxes in cost at a dealer being $415, it was well worth it in my opinion.

I installed it today, and now I enjoy driving my car even more!

My Audi was worth spending that money to make it new again, not sure about yours! :-)

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Do you have a link to the company?

JAudi 11-15-2010 07:14 AM

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Sorry guys, I'm new here. What are the rules for posting links in this forum? I'm getting no gain from it, just found a good seller on ebay, and others may benefit from it as well!

(In the meantime trapper_canada, PM me and I'll get you the link to the sellers site.)

Hey JAudi,

Could you please provide a link for the seller. I have to replace my door after the right hinge broke today. :(

Re: Need a Glove Box door

This is the eBay seller that I purchased my Glove Box door from. Note, the seller is in UK, however he specifically mentions the Glove box is for the Lefthand Drive Cars. I also verified the part number with the ETKA database.

Shop eBay Canada Store - EMS UK LTD:: New Volkswagen Parts, New Audi Parts

I was extremely impressed with how he dealt with my questions, and the prompt shipping. Received in Canada from UK in 3 days.
Also, he reduced the shipping costs by the amount of the VAT taxes (~17%)

Hope it helps,

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Thanks Jeff for the link! :) I'm amazed by their prices - less than half of what I've found.

Can I find the part number on the door itself?

I believe I need either Dark Grey (8E1857124A33F) or Platinum (8E1857124AW23) which they currently don't advertise.

Re: Need a Glove Box door

I think they only have the one colour for sale, black, and luckily for me my interior is Black.

From what I recall, there is NO part number listed on the part itself.

hi guys, jaudi did he send the dampeners as well?

JAudi 03-02-2011 11:38 AM

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Nope, this is strictly for the glove box door.

You need to remove it yourself, and even swap out the handle and lock mechanism, as it is keyed to your car specifically.

I took the whole glovebox off the car when I replaced it, and the hardest part was to get the pins that the door pivots on out without doing too much damage. As long as you are careful, its an easy swap.

Re: Need a Glove Box door

Audi Oakville quoted me $319.93 + taxes for a new glovebox door. But after inspection they said that they could install a reinforced hinge and repair the piston for $178.50 + taxes, which I agreed to.

bint2k 03-02-2011 07:18 PM

Re: Need a Glove Box door

reinforced hinge? as in they fixed the broken piece with a metal bracket like most people do? any chance u can send me more info i'd like to take mine in and see what their thinking... do u have pics of their fix for you?

I have had this happen on both my A4's. Seems to be a design flaw.

There is always the old standby fix...

3M 1110-A 48mmx10yd Gray Duct Tape on eBay.ca (item 280649816266 end time 24-Apr-11 17:23:55 EDT)
