MIssing paint on dash buttons

Hi there,

this one I admit it is quite a small detail. Anyway, since it bothers me alot and I will correct it anyway, I ask the question to ensure I do it the best way.

The buttons inside my car has much paint removed, probably because the previous owner was Freddy Krueger or something like this :)

Anyway, I want to correct this visual horror. I already corrected my window controls (ordered a new one and I replaced it).

But for this one, I am unable to find a new dash control module (not sure of the name of that).

How would you proceed if you had to repair this? Would you have the buttons individually removed (and how!) or you would somehow paint directly?

Probably not of interest for many of you though!!

I've never seen buttons so worn, I don't know of any fix for that but a lot of members here have great idea's and may be more help to you on this one. I think replacing the module might be the only fix. I will ask my friends and see if have any suggestions.

Good luck

Audi Club (South Africa) - Whity's Audi A4 B6

Although I don't remember seeing what kind of paint he uses, this thread might get you started at least.

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Ohhh no way lol 900 is too much. I like DIY's so ill try it. I just need the right paint.
So many things to fix.
1. glove box
2. paint
3. t/c button
4. fan relay
5. power steering (doing that now)
The previous owner treated the car like an .

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

what are you going to do about the glovebox? one of my hinges broke the other day, and the same thing happened to my old one a couple of years ago.

No need to hijack the painting dash buttons thread. There's already a glove box fixing thread.

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Well, I did not painted them yet, but it's in my plans to take pictures of my progress. For now I have to read a DIY to unmount the console!

But... pics will come

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Can someone point me out a writeup on how to remove the console trim please?

Like this image, although I'm sure not as much unmounting as this is required to remove the temp control unit:

Re: Missing paint on dash buttons - ADDED PICS

Ok I've proceeded to the extraction of the buttons as follow :

First of all, look how bad are the buttons :

Since I've already replaced my newly-blown (yeah.. wtf!) radio, I already got the removal tools.

It's fairly easy to remove the bottom part, two clips on the top of it, in the back

Nothing broken yet !!

I've decided to remove the wheels too because I'll paint the trim finally.
Hope reinstall will be okay !!

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Okay, project continued...

Now I've had to remove the paint on the buttons. It was easy. Then, I've cut electrical black tape and forged the "+" and the "-" symbols the best I could.

First layers of spray...

NOW, I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM ! WHY THE HELL IS THAT PAINT ON THE TRIM SO HARD TO REMOVE??? ANY IDEAS ??

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

good job man! my buttons are like that as well. look around the cigarette lighter, as i believe smoking may cause this. im pretty sure the previous owner of my A4 was a smoker. the lighter looks well used.

anyway, while you're at it, why not give this a try see if it works, specifically post #5

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Today I'll plug the whole thing back in, I've completed the work. I took pictures and will send them!

For the moment, what I can tell is if I would have to start over again, I would just completely paint over the red and blue buttons, without trying to recreate a "+" and a "-". Because the final result is not bad, but not as professionnal as the rest of the console.

Plus, be prepared to paint ALL buttons too, because of the difference of paint vs the original paint. Even at 30$ the paint that I specially have prepared for this job was not exact so I had to paint ALL buttons.

For the others which were intact, I simply put on some black tape veeeery precisely cut just to cover the text/symbol and the little top corner light.

Plus of course the trim, which was a real pain to sand!

Now concerning post no.5 in this thread, I NEED to know if someone else with a Symphony II is able to press twice to get an AUX display on the screen!

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

FINAL THOUGHTS OF THE PROJECT :

Here is the results of all this :

http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/1858/1002534ae.jpg
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/7904/1002535y.jpg
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/4813/1002536q.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8031/1002538y.jpg
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/9697/finalwqz.jpg

Honnestly, I am a perfectionnist and I did not have the quality I expected. Here are a few points that are unsatisfying :
- It's quite hard to sand down to perfection the trim, even with grit #150, then 200, then 400
- The paint, even at 30$ is not the same, and under bright light it is visible
- The "+" and "-" and not as good as "perfect"
- Concerning those + and -, I would paint them all without the symbol, I it was to be done again
- I had to do all the buttons because of the difference in the paint

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Even though it wasn't a 10/10 in your eyes I think you did a pretty solid job. Thanks for sharing. I see what you mean about the difference in paint. Seems more shiny, eh?

ricke666 04-27-2011 11:50 AM

Re: MIssing paint on dash buttons

Yep... waaayyy too shiny. I am sure the guy who made the paint could have add less "gloss" in it. Anyway, when installed it's not that bad.

Next project !
