Home made race gas
 

hey everyone... after a lot of reading up on the subject, and a desire to play with my APR 100oct program, i have decided to make some home made race gas.... i figure it should be about 100-102 octane. no cel yet.
this is what i used:

14L of 94 oct from Husky/Mohawk
5L of Toluene
about 225mL of Marvel Mystery Oil.

I've got you at 99.3 octane rating, FWIW. I would run some VAG-COM logs to check your timing pull, just to be sure. In this weather, you may even be able to advance it a few more degrees and get more power.

I run water/methanol injection so I can effectively run a 100+ octane tune, but I only pay for it when I'm hard on the throttle (and the system is spraying). Plus I don't have to worry about mixing fuels, or breathing toluene/xylene :(

In the old days or the muscle car era we use to head up to the local airport and fill jugs of nav gas and dump it into our cars.

I should also note that Navgas or aviation fuel is normally 100 octane with no ethanol content. Gas companies normally use ethanol to achieve the higher octane levels for auto fuels, with the exception of some like Shell.

funny you mentioned it, i went out tonight to log some 3rd gear pulls.... i was pulling timing as much as 10.3 degrees (a little to high for comfort lol), so i added 2 more litres of toluene, and it dropped it down to about 8 degrees max pull (probably ok now)
as i understand, my car can only pull 12 degrees, so i have to be careful... maybe next time, i will use 12L gas, and 6L toluene.

Mike, I wouldn't run leaded fuel in any modern car (with a cat and 02 sensors)! Keep it in the 7-litre, 300HP, 11MPG, solid-rear-axle cars that you old guys love :D

Jordon, 10º is playing with fire! Even aggressive tunes usually keep it =<6º. Have you done a cost comparison on the toluene vs. installing a methanol-injection system? Kits are pretty inexpensive these days, and methanol is dirt cheap...

Yeah, I've been considering a w/m system.... The thing with race gas is, it was just to try out the 100oct program for fun. With it in, I see NO timing pull on 93 oct program.
I think part of the prob, was the unknown amount of fuel in the tank. I figured I only had a few liters left, but who knows, maybe it was 10 liters? I think if I were to wait now until this tank is low and mix up another batch, it would probably get my timing pull to within 6 degrees, but as you said, toluene isn't cheap ($16.50 for 3.78L), but it is still much cheaper (and more effective) than octane booster.

Be very cautious about Toluene It shuts down kidneys and bursts red. blood cells so you breathe but not get any oxygen. It also bursts rubber fuel lines. One time use should be ok thou

You know, Adam, gas contains toluene, right? Up to 10% if I recall, and it should be fine up to around 30%.
And yes, as is true with ALL solvents and flammable chemicals, use with caution. Do not inhale, do not drink, do not contact with bare skin, do not use near open flame etc.
As for rubber parts damage, that is why you pre mix it with the gas before dumping in your tank, and don't go over 30%. fuel lines are safe at this level.

Modern day Nav Gas has also gone to the No Lead rule these days. I just mentioned what I use to do in the old days which doesn't apply today.
