Battery light on = no power steering?

So the wife and I are pulling up to the driveway last night and all of a sudden the battery light comes on. Thinking the car has stalled, she turns the ignition off(the engine was actually still running) restarts the engine and still had no steering.
Its going to be a good week before I can get it into the shop, any ideas what this is?

Your serpentine belt on the front of the engine drives both your alternator and your power steering pump. Check to make sure that it has not come loose or broken first.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a new belt on that thing.. looks a little tight.. Is there anyway I could do this myself?

Never done one myself on the 3.0L, but I think you might need a special tool to move the tensioner to get the new belt on. (3.0L owners feel free to chime in here!) I'm sure someone has figured out a way around that. Other than that, just need to make sure you have a diagram showing you how to route the belt through the pulleys, pop the plastic cover off and you're all set. Other option is make sure your battery is charged up and then you'll be ok to drive it a short distance to your local shop.
