When I did my own oil change I used the Mann filter. If you intend on doing oil changes more frequently than what the dealership recommends than use the Bosch and save a few bucks from the Mann.

I have a B5 but I use the OEM large diesel oil filter '068 115 561 B' which is a good choice, do you know if these are the large or small filters? With any filter the important thing to do is to look inside the filter and make sure there is a pressure relief valve inside because the engine doesn't have one of these. On really cold starts the oil will typically bypass the filter because the pressure is too great to pull it through the filter element so you need a bypass valve. Cheaper filters like Fram do not have an internal bypass valve which can lead to oil starvation. Given the choices above I would go with the Mann filter as long as it was the large capacity one.

 

How are the K&N filters? I bought those today for my friday's oil change... I do my oil change 5000km or 3months whichever comes first. I'm switching to 5w-40 and K&N from 0w-30 and Fram filter (all castrol syntec) because the dealership recommended so. Is this a good combination?

 

Yes, it is a good recommendation... I have used the k&n filters, they are good, but overpriced. Of the above choices, I too would go with Mann, again, as long as it is the large capapcity one.

Sorry to bring up an old post but I didn't want to create another thread on this. Where can I buy this locally, I'm from Vancouver BC, or online? The website above charges an arm and a leg for shipping.

 

Here's one rule you should live buy: Never, ever save on regular maintenance items (oil change, air filter, etc.) because you want to get as much life as possible out of your engine. Another way to look at it is an expensive oil filter and expensive synthetic oil is cheaper than having to rebuild the motor.

You can buy most filters locally, as I do, since I don't prefer doing transactions over the Internet, nor do I have a credit card facilitate this. I live on the west coast as well and I prefer going to Napa (I get discounts here) but you can also go to Lordco and other Auto Part Businesses. I would not recommend going to Canadian Tire. I know that some of the high quality filters you've mentioned as well as Napa Gold filters which are also good. My father has been using Napa filters since we've moved to Canada.

I would also recommend using synthetic oil from quality brands. I would recommend Castrol.
