Unhappy windscreen demist

I got a problem with my windscreen desmister, also, it would seem the blows to the feet. The air blows out fine in the middle. I have taken the glove compartment, but coult find any motors to test, just one big controler. Can anyone give me some advice on how to fix this???? It's getting dangerous during the winter now

I don't think i'll be able to hel pt oo much when it comes to the climate control ,but i want to try and clear this up to make some sense.

Your windshild defroster does not blow air.. It does blow on your feet and out the middle vents facing towards the back of the car... correct? It just won't blow out the top of the dash onto your window.. Am I getting this right?

How long have you owned and do you understand the workings of the auto climate control? Or did this just stop working one day.

If your getting air to blow in certain areas, i would say your blower fan is working and its the mechanism in your dash thats no longer working to switch it to windshield defrost... I wouldn't know where to start to fix this as I would think the whole dash would have to come apart.

I've had my 2004 A4 for a few months now, (first Audi), and am still a little confused about how the Climate Control system works.

I've had strange happenings both in the hottest heat of the summer, as well as the last few days, when it's been hovering around the freezing point.

In both cases, i get in the car after work, start driving, and either no A/C or no heat coming out of the vents. The blower sits at 1 bar, for a while, then eventually by the time i get to the highway (5 mionutes away), it starts to do what its supposed to.

Does it take the engin to be working at driving RPM's for the Climate control to kick in, whether with the AC or with the heat?

The heated seats are super hot at level 6, very quickly, but the vents dont seem to blow the cold/hot air as soon as expected.

(Sorry to hijack this thread!)

Thanks,
Jeff

^^^^^ yes, when it is on auto, it will not start throwing heat and turning up the fan until your engine is warm.. If it started blowing hard as soon as you got in, it would blow cold.. so it is working correctly.

The seat will heat up immediately.. its got an electric heater in the seat to where as your heat out the vents depends on the coolant being hot....

I dont have a problem with the temperature of the heaters. Only the air con, which obviously needs sorting. I've only had the car for a few months. I've obviously got myself a duff car. Atleast it's something that keeps me getting to work, and has become my little project. Or my curse! lol!
Anyways, when I close all the vents, air just manages to get through the windscreen vent and side vents that clear the fron windows. But I think that's because the air has to go somewhere.
I have no idea about the climate control. sorry.
So you're thinking I have to take the dash off? oh crickey!!

No No No. For air to flow up to windscreen, you have 2 options. 1 is to select the up arrow on the dash beside the climate temp control. There are 3 buttons, usually, for windscreen/up, centre vents, and feet or down arrow. For defrost, there is a separate Defrost button which has a symbol that looks like a trapezoid. The proper defrost setting will not only blow air up to windscreen, but activates the A/C compressor. If you have done all this and still no air flowing to where it is supposed to, then you have a stuck flap, underneath the dash area. I have had this problem several times on my previous Audi, and it is not a difficult or expensive fix, if you have the right mechanic. It is possible that the motor controller that moves the flaps is also not working properly, and that too is not a difficult fix, but a bit more expensive.

people, people! really, you MUST read your owners manuals before operating these fine machines! not everything is intuitive in the operation, but once you read the ENTIRE manual, you will understand the finer points of your vehicle much better! there are a lot of functions these vehicles are capable of (though not all of them are even covered in the manual), and after you read the manual you will be much better equipped to take advantage of this fine engineering!

You're absolutely right! Read the manual first! I remember being taught, when I was young, that whenever you get something new; read the manual first! Over the years, I've developed my own routine. Read manual entirely first. THEN try out things and play with them. Then read manual again, then try stuff again - with manual in other hand to check that everything is working as intended.

Once you've mastered the controls/user interface - whether a car, stereo, camera or computer, and something doesn't work; you can be certain that:

1. it is a malfunction and not "operator error"
2. somehting wasn't installed right
3. Manual is wrong (they have been known to be)

Think that this gentleman is new to Audi and how things work - like delay in fan starting when engine is cold and you ask for heat - and perhaps isn't familiar enough with operation (read manual once more perhaps) or that things in car are screwed up pretty badly. I can tell you having driven full sized Audis for more than 21 years now that the HVAC systems can be finicky.

Talking Re: windscreen demist

I'm laughing here! I put confused minds at rest..... all I'm saying, after reading the manual, as in the stupid little booklet on the basic workings, there is no air going to the windscreen. If you're talking about the "service and repair" manual, I never got one. I've only had the car for a few months. It's very difficult to get one.
I had a little butchers at it Saturday. I've found a machanism under the dash, located directly behind the climate control panel It appears to be jammed. I didnt want to force it just incase it was nothing to do with it. I'm not puching and pulling in hope something happens, so dont worry about that guys! Anyway, having spent a good 3 hours on the audi Saturday, I felt a tiny amount of air going to both the windsceen and the feet. On the panel only the UP arrow was on, and was on full blast. You'll find this funny..... I think the previous owner tried to fix it also, because as soon as I turned it up full blast the front middle vent popped out!!! What the???? He/She decided to rip the vent out to see what was going on, and broke the clips on the dash, and tried to fix it back in with a rubber glue!!
