Default Wheel Bearing?

1998 A4 Q 1.8t

Does anybody know how to diagnose which wheel bearing is going bad by turning. Is it, if one side is going, turning to the same side will quiet the roar? or is it the other way around?
thanx

Noisy bearing will go quiet when lateral load is put on it. Right turn -> then it's one of the left side bearings; left turn -> it's one of the right side bearings. Putting on a lift and pushing/turning each wheel in turn will confirm where the problem is.

Default Re: Wheel Bearing? or Diff noise?

So I'm hearing this loud noise, kind of like humming+reving or roaring noise. It is coming from the back of the car. It is mostly audible at 80-100 km/hr. The noise goes away when I drive on a large right curve on the highway. So I changed my left (rear driver side) wheel bearing. The sound is still there. Can a diff make such noises?
Tires are in good shape.

I have the same issue and I am replacing both rear, I will let you know if that fixed it for me..(of course its 100% sure its the same issue but I have the same symptoms, but for me its when I take a left turn so normally it would be the right bearing but noise comes from the left side, weird)

I just replaced front driver's side. Turning to the right (even slightly) made the noise much worse.

Could it be the tires that are out of round??? If the tire is squared then it would be very noisy when the car up speed. This happened to one of my 4 years old Falken 451 tires. This pose no safety risk but you have to put up with the noise.

I had 451's on mine too. They are very noisy tires....

My buddy also has an audi, and I tried his new tires, problem not solved. The noise goes away when I turn right. However it does not get any louder when I turn left. I tried coasting in neutral, even with the engine turned off. Noise is proportionate with the speed.

You should get a mechanic to take a look at this problem, if it's indeed a wheel bearing problem then get it fix asap before the drum got damage. Otherwise you face an expensive repair bill.
