I am not sure if that is the same issue it does not sound like it. I can check tomorrow as it is already late.

So... I followed 1move's instructions and removed the shifter, and everything around it. Thanks again, 1move... really easy to-do-it procedure.
It didn't help in my case: the magnets were in their places, nothing shifted. After I put everything back, and turn the key to the on position the PRNDS... highlighted solid; no flashing. After moving the shifter to N, and D twice, the PRNDS showed the P correctly. CEL is still on, but I know it will go away after few drives.
What I've noticed: when in P, and PRNDS highlighted, the TCM was confused and didn't know that the shifter was in P, so it increased the RPM a little bit (up to 1200rpm). When pressing the brake, of course, it went back to under 1000. It seems that the TCM doesn't get the right signal from the shifter.
1move, is this what really happens ? Do you know ? Could be the circuit board (under the shifter) at fault ? [In connection with the fault code I've got: P0706].

Any input ?

Took the car to the dealer - Mark Motors in Ottawa. For the fault error code I have (17090 - P0706 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit) the dealer said the TCM has to be replaced. The cost: around $900 in parts, and 6 hours (!!!) of labor ($101.50/hr).
The sad part of the story: this Audi (65k now) replaced a Dodge Neon, which is not at par with an A4, right ?!; I had driven the Neon 180k without any transmission problems.
It seems that I made the wrong choice when I decided to go for a 2005 Audi A4 with a CVT transmission.

Sorry to hear that but we advise everyone not to go with CVT, as it is the worst tranny on an Audi out there. With that said the issue could have still happened in the other A4's.

I didn't know when I bought the car. Now I know, but it's too late. I will try and see if I can save some money by fixing the problem by taking the car to a non-dealer garage.
Two Audi dealers from Montreal, already, quoted the labor to 4 hrs instead of 6 () Frustating !

Find out how much a new TCM is and I will send you instructions on how to replace it.

Thanks very much.
The mechanic at the dealer said the TCM is inside the tranny, so it has to be taken down, change the fluid at the end, reprogram the module etc...

BS on taking out the tranny. the tcm is sitting in the back of it and its not that hard like they say it is.
