Your choice, but for my money, if doing a swap anyway, I would have spent just a few bucks more and gotten at least a K04-15 or better yet a F4H-L (Frankenturbo)
for about a grand the frankenturbo kit comes with an upgraded exhaust manifold and TIP, and it runs nicely with TT injectors and K04 software (but there are also other options for it)

II had a long talk with the turbo shop and told him what I want. The stock turbo will suit my needs for a long time. When I do upgrade my brother will by it from me for his Suzuki Samari project. For now it will work, right now I want to start with a solid reliable car and then do other things as money comes my way. A slow but steady project. More gonna focus on handling and doing a 5spd swap

So here is some pics:

The cracked turbo, there are three cracks. two on the pic side and one real big one on the back side of the exhaust housing. The impellor was flopping in the breeze as well.

This is just a naked messy engine bay. Might pressure wash everything out before I put it all back together. That way it will be nice and clean for the next time i'm in it working.

All right time for some power adders... not gonna listen to the turbo shop. Gonna put a proper turbo on this and full port work and not half ***!!!!! If i'm gonna do all this work I want some performance. The car can sit in my shop for as long as it takes!!!!!!

Right now I have the head at my work stripped down and ready for a full build. The turbo won't be a stock replacement and I will be doing a full port job on it as well as a full rebuild.

MY MIND IS MADE UP!!! FINALLY!!!

Here are pics of work so far...

Vacc tested to .72-.75... better than new and still gonna make it better

Found exhaust manifold cracked... time for big turbo and new manifold. This was the deciding factor when i said..... it and I'm going for it!!!!

Head pressure tested and no leaks, perfect for a build Now it's ready to go

Bead blasted some parts. The intake will be ported also and bead blasted again after I'm done. Kinda just wanted to clean it up before I worked with it

Damn! I'm starting to get excited just from that last post there! Looks good man, I am amazed at how much bigger the intake ports are on the aeb head- should really help in making that thing into a beast! Any ideas on how big of a turbo? I think Mike Hood uses a GT35RS @37psi on his car making 630awhp... I think I just cried a little lol
lots of ppl used to go gt2871, but now I see a lot more gt30 etc. Turbos keep getting bigger on these little engines! Of course there is a trade off, though with lag.
Man, I wish I had the machine shop access that you have. I am soooo jealous!!!

Good to hear that you're going for it! When you started, I distinctly recall advising you to just buy what you really want, and don't half-step it - you'll save money and time and frustration in the long run

GT2871, GT3071, and GT3076 offer a good range of drive-ability and power, but I would consider any of the new billet-wheel turbos on the market (GTX prefix for Garrett). Any GT35 frame turbo is just bonkers for a daily, but Mike Hood has been pushing the envelope on the 1.8T scene for the last decade. Did you decide what you're going to do for a block?

I am not sure about the block. I am gonna look into the options there. What are the complications with doing a 06a block. As in tranny or other things like starter etc... I do believe mine is a 058 block. Is that right?

Right now I am gonna focus on the head and getting the turbo and chip. 3In maybe 3.5in for the exhaust with a test pipe.

This is gonna take alot of money so I want to apologize in advance for the delays during the build. I am gonna be doing bodywork on the car in between me getting parts. I am a autobody man also. I used to own my own shop and have all the tools slow but steady...

that is looking pretty sweet already. Don't know anything about the turbos and such, but sure sounds like you picked up a sweet deal overall.

WOW, just checked out vwvortex for info and they have a nice tech section. Helped me gain some info on what I need for my lil project for sure

-Bottom end is going to be rebuilt stock with new performance rods. It will also be balanced. It should be good for what I am trying to achieve. This may or may not change.

-Top end will get new exhaust guides, intakes are perfect. Running stock valves. Head will be ported. Not to extreme but i'll do a nice port job non the less.

-Turbo is still undecided? lots of options here and need to think about this. I am kinda thinking around 15-18psi boost thou. Max probably 22psi

-Chip is undecided? Need to read more and maybe see if I can get some test drives in a car that has been chipped. Would like to get the feel for different tunes if I can. APR seems common and has good results. Will most likely go with that setup.

-Exhaust will be full 3in from the turbo, cat delete also.

Question: If I am doing a 5spd swap it looks like my crank will accept a pilot bearing. Am I correct on that or will I need a manual crank? Do I need the diode mod if I am doing a chip? Or is this a do one or the other kinda deal?

Water meth will be in the future after I get it up and running and also a FMIC... kinda last on my list of stuff thou.
