Parts I should look out for.
Hi I am currently debating buying a 2000 audi a4 1.8t quattro with 135,000km. I was hoping that somebody could tell me what parts on the car usually need to be replaced at 135km. I am not too sure how well it has been maintained mechanically, but from the pictures the interior and exterior seem to be in good shape.

At 135 000 km the timing belt/water pump replacement should have already been done.
You'll want to see how the turbo feels while driving or try to guage how hard its been driven on a 1.8T. Other big things to watch out for are cracked/leaking CV joints (the outer ones, the inner ones almost never have an issue), control arms (can be checked if there is play in the tire when it is off the ground).
If the car has been cared for well then your big concern should be the timing belt but thats the main and biggest one which will cost you the most if something goes wrong.

....the maintenance manual for the 2000 a4 1.8T says that the timing belt should be replaced at 180,000 kms. what gives? I know timing belts are usually done around 120,000.....I hope it's not just my manual that says 180,000
By the way, Black RS4 and Marko_tomas got it exactly right. those are the parts I had to replace on my '00

take the Car to Ceadarbrea VW in Scarborough (on Markham Rd) and get them to inspect it for you, they will be able to tell you what (if any) issues it has and what you are getting yourself into.
this is the only place in T.O. I trust my car, as I used to deal with them quite a bit when I worked at VW Canada.
T-Belt Inspection is done at 96k, for the 1.8T the truth is it's not the belt that usualy fails it's the tensioner. I'm sure the belt could live to 180k fairly easely. I do mine every 100k to be on the safe side. and use the ECSTuning ultimate Timing belt kit, great kit.

Can I change it (the timing belt, tensioner...the kit) myself or do I need to leave this to professionals?
How difficult is it to do? Has anyone changed their own timing belt?
Isn't the timing belt at the back of the engine block? between the firewall and the engine?
I like to work on my car as much as I can...although I do realize that some of the mods/maintenance issues need to be left for the professional mechanics to do.

the timing belt is in the front of our cars. this is not a job for the weak of heart because if it's done improperly it can royaly mess your engine up.
a good shop should be able to do it in 6hours or less depending on the cars mine took a little longer because of so seized bolts... pretty much every one. I left this to be done by proffesional parts and labour only cost me $700. not too shabby.
