In a closed loop hydronic system there should not be any air that would cause flow problems. The air lock has to be found and bled off somehow. A hole anywhere in the system is a potential for air to be sucked in causing an air lock.

Also do look at your oil as suggested by mksu19.

I went into the shop and the mechanic did a pressure test with me . I was right there and we tested it to 15 PSI

We kept the pressure at 15 PSI for about 10 minutes while we checked under the car for leaks and couldn't see any at all.
He said "where is the leak"?

Then I mentioned the water pump diagnoses by Independent, and then we checked the water pump. A very very slight bubble was forming around the seal of the water pump. I am saying very small because it was hard for me to even verify that it was a bubble.
Then after 15 or 20 minutes we checked the pressure and it had dropped to about 13.5

Also the Canadian Tire mechanic said I might try try a coolant leak sealant because the leak is so small.

There didnt appear tp be a 'major leak" as reported by Mark at Independent Tuning.
This leaves me wondering, was I being sold a new water pump and timing belt that I didnt really have an urgent need for ?..or am I missing something?
I wouldnt want to falsely acuse Independent Tuning , but am very sceptical at this point.

Any thoughts?
Also any opinions on the coolant sealant?
There are various brands out there

Thanks

Hi Guys just thought I would update you

My car is leaking coolant and not a minor leak.
It wasnt leaking prior to the heater core flush, but what can i do ?

So I took it to an Audi mechanic in my neighbourhood. He charges 65 per hour

He said it needs a
1) water pump and timing belt
2) possibly a thermostat. he asked me if I want to replace it
3) manifold and camshaft gasket

he will call me tomorrow with an estimate

Might I add that while you're there, make sure to address all the rollers (replace bearings, etc.) and replace both the cam seal and crankshaft seal with a new sprocket bolt. It is ideal to do these front seals at the same time when timing belt is already off to save repeat labor, same reason for doing the thermostat.

EDIT: Beware of quotes that include just the timing belt and tensioner but no other rollers etc.

Thanks

hopefully these messages will help someone else on here

I am just really ticked off because my car wasnt leaking coolant prior to having the heater core flushed.
I wish I could determine if there is a connection between the flush and the leak or is it just a fluke.

So I have gone from 115 dollars for a heater core flush to around 1890 to fix the leak. (includes thermostat/oil level sensor)
Parts are 930 and labour is 16 hours x 60 = 960

Quoted me this for Timing belt, water pump . rollers , tensioner , thermostat, camshaft seal, etc etc
also doing a oil level sensor (needed)

Is all this required just because I have a leak in the water pump?

This car is starting to wear me down......

My advice to all Audi owners is ..never leave your car with any mechanic.
Always watch the mechanic work and learn with him
It will save you money for sure.

Although not a necessity, most will highly suggest that since you have everything else apart, that it's wise to replace the other items mentioned to save both time and money. It is ultimately up to you though since it's your car and your hard earned cash.

As far as your experience with the current ride, it is unfortunate that your Audi is (at the moment) giving you a hard time. You could trade it and be done with it OR give her a little love, I'm sure she'll give you a few more trouble free years ahead. Remember, with any brand cars, MAINTENANCE IS THE KEY!!!

Morning everyone...Started this weekend - cold air blowing at idle, heats up nice when the RPMs are up. Also loosing coolant somewhere. I checked the oil cap and it doesnt have any white in it, so shouldnt be the head gasket. Looking like i need a new water pump. Since it is time for me to do the timing belt anyway, hopefully this resolves the issue. Going to schedule an appointment with RMP motors. I will let you guys know how it goes...

I have a bad feeling thats whats wrong with mine...
Did yours need throttle to make the heat warmer?
I cleaned stuff out late last year... I thought it helped, but I dont think it did.
It seems as if the pump isnt pushing much coolant...
I dont like the sounds of timing belt and water pump...
