Need motor for a '97 auto(1.8t), will a '99 manual work?
I have a '97 A4 with a bad motor, the timing belt
is good but the #2 con rod has broken. Engine code is AEB.
I have found 2 different motors but both are from a '99 5psd.
Can these motors swap into a '97? I've heard that there are differences in the cranks between sticks and autos and differences in sensors between years.
Any help would be great!
Thanks
Clay

The auto and manual cranks are different and will require some machine work. To put a manual-crank engine into an auto car, you will need to machine down the crank spigot so that it will clear the torque converter.
Why not just replace the con rod? I have some AEB rod/piston assemblies kicking around if you need some. I just got back from Calgary yesterday - I could have hand-delivered them!

Thanks for the reply. After hours of reading up on the net I found the same thing, cranks are different. I bought the car with a broken rod and have no idea what shape the rest of the motor is in(its got 322,000kms on it) The fact that it broke one rod makes me hesitate trying to save it. Thanks for the offer though!
