Hello,

I have a 1999,5 audi A4 1.8t quattro with 110 000 km on it.


This morning I was on the road and suddenly , I was not able to shift the gears. I had to push very hard on the lever with my hand to be able to have it at the right place. First and second gears are the worst ones.

When the car is not running and the engine is stopped. It shift just like I was used to . there is no problem.

1-Can it be my clutch (it was already very low) ? Is there a oil contaner that needs to be filled? ( I beleive this is an hydraulic clutch)

It felts like when you are trying to change gear but you dont have your foot on the clutch

2-Can it be a damaged gear. (when running it does not make any noises), it runs perfetly. the problem is really occuring when trying to change speed when engine is running.

3-can it be a support that has an effect on gear shifting ( out of 25 speed change I made while riding , 4 or 5 went perfectly ) Most of the time its not OK , but it happens

I had 4000$ on this car last year. Just hope this is not a too big repair again.

cost me 2500 to change clutch pressure plate flywheel, master and slave cylinder . I hate that car 8000$ in repair in 1,5 year for a 110 000km car ...My last audi for sure

I had problems finding somehone working on those cars. Since car was not riding safely , I had to stop at the first german garage...They charge 60$ an hour and only use oem parts that they sell at dealership price. I hate those guys that riped me off and I also hate my audi. Great car to ride ...always in garage at 110 000km . It sucks

So just because this one audi has been bad, you hate them. I have a 99 A4 too, with almost 220,000 km and its been great. One big repair for $800, and I'll have to do the clutch soon, but no other real problems. Do you keep up with maintenance? And $60/hour for a garage is pretty good, I wish I got charged that.

Maybe its your driving and not the car.... i had a buddy with a 97 A4 2.8 with 490 000km's on it and not a thing wrong with it, but you gotta maintain it before it breaks.

yeah i was just gonna say that 60/hour is REALLY good unless they took extra long to do everything :P

but where about in Canada are you?
if you are close to toronto...i would highly recommend Independent Tuning as opposed to going to the stealership

I think they charge like 74 or 78 an hour...but they are honest...and very knowledgeable with audi's since they pretty much only service audi's....so they usually will get the job done sooner than most shops thus resulting in lower labour

also you should always shop around...
example:
I have to do the front brakes on my car...pads and rotors
dealership said ~550
1st indy shop i called ~ 470
Independent tuning ~ 350

To be honnest , I really love driving this car . I know many people had good experience with audi but I rode it smoothly and had many problems. I just think that some audi are better than other . I had to change many suspension parts as the road are not very good around (this is not Audi fault). I should have change all the control arms at once (I will do that in 3 weeks ) .

One think is sure is that they cost a lot to fix and I'm not the only one that had a bad expericne with an audi...Many garage I went to told me that I'm not alone ...they told me those 50 000$ cars sell for cheap prices and there is a reason for that ...


After everything I went trough, I have decided to keep my car. After all those problems I think I may drive it for a couple of month withoutn any repairs. I will perform some of them by myself as I can't affort garage prices...

Did not want to say Audi were not good cars , Mine was a problem and I hope to solve it . My dream is to own a 2010 S4. They are great ...
