locking, odometer problem
Have several wired problem suddenly happen on my 98 A4 Quattro. The instrument cluster were flshing when I was driving. After I parked the car, I found trunk was not close before the locking problem happened. Alarm system work fine. I still can hear beep when I lock the car.
Problems:
1. can not lock/unlock any door. Can not hear pump sound.
2. dirver side door security red LED does not flash, passenger side works
3. Odometer does not show number before I start car. If I open the door, it will show milage for 10 seconds.
4. instrument cluster does have infomation even the door is open
Checked remote control battery, no problem. I checked all the fuses, no problem. Do those problem are related? Have the lock pump broken?
Please help, any hints? Thanks!

Re: locking, odometer problem
What happened before the problem started? Did you have any other problems or did this just appear out of the blue? Did you check both door locks to see if they were damaged by someone breaking into the car? Have you scanned the car with VAG-COM to see if there are any codes? If you even have a defective door switch it could cause this problem but some history may help.

Re: locking, odometer problem
Thanks Corrado_Guy!
Nothing happened. The lock switch on the driver door only can lock, but it does not work now. Driver side door hing does not work very well, so I have to push hard when I close it. Driver door handle is also kind of loose. I used a OBDII reader, but did see any wrong code. Hope it is just door switch problem. Why does it affect Odometer?

Re: locking, odometer problem
You should probably address some of those issues, have you tried lubing the door hinges and the check rod to loosen them up? When the door is stiff you can try a really light penatrating fluid such as WD40 to see if this frees things up a little and then follow it up with something thicker like red grease and both of these are spray lubes. If the check rod is really rusted (this is the rod that is attached to the door that holds it open) then it can also make the door really hard to move so try some grease on it.
You may want to check the micro switch on the lock and make sure it is working properly and fix the handle. These can cause problems because they are tied into the central locking and alarm circuits to name a few. If you have the winter package on your car you can also lift the door handle to turn the lock heater on so there is a fair bit going on with that handle.

Re: locking, odometer problem
I check the door micro switch, and it is ok. Then, I opened the trunk, and took the central control module out. I pressed the remote control and hear 1 second working noise. The vacuum motor was warm, since I lock and unlock many times. Finally, when I open the bottom of the motor, the graphite pad is totally broken.
Can I just replace it with a similar pad? Otherwise I have to replace the whole vacuum motor.
