Question Lets talk about Shifiting/Clutching/RPM's

Hey guys, This be my first post. so be easy.

Just bought a stock 2001 A4, I've been driving it for about 2 weeks now and am still having trouble with smooth accelerations off the line.
I want to drive the smoothest and fastest possible.

I notice the clutch needs a lot of travel distance from the floor before it will engage the gear. I literally have to lift my heel off the floor mat to release the clutch further before it catches and starts to move the vehicle.

1) Is this the same for many of you ? I think my clutch is just really worn, am I wrong?

2) Also, how high do you push your RPM's before upshifting to 2nd ?

I notice when in starting in first I really only move about 20ft before needing to upshift to 2nd (usually 3500rpm)

3) I wanna know if you guys rev more or less than what I do between 1st and 2nd?

4) What do you usually push your RPM's to before shifting up for 1st,2nd, 3rd,4th,5th?

5) Any tips for driving stick in an A4 ? Cause I know this bitch can go faster than how I'm driving it.

Thanks in advance.

OK! This is great if you need to go somehwre fast, and nobody is around...
There is something called "The Perfect Drive" and this is when you baby your car and have consideration for all those Hyundai drivers... just to pick on a few!

Sen Sen it sounds like your clutch is on its last legs... S4zAudihere's previous car, maybe (sorry man, could not resist this one!).

I drive mine in first to about 3,500 RPM and yes it is very short! For all the rest I change at about 3,000... unless I drag S4zAudihere an then I will red-line it too!

Remember that after you drive hard, when you stop, you need to allow your turbo to cool-off before you shot off the motor... I remeber reading somewhere something about 2 minutes!

I hope this helps: good luck!

i've got a '08 3.2 quattro... and from my experience it drives very differently than a 1.8.

if u dont baby the clutch off the line, it can be very jerky... on avg i usually shift from 1st to 2nd around 3500 to 4000 rpm.
and yes, the clutch needs to be pushed in quite far for the first 2.

between 2nd and 3rd, it is usually more spaced, and requires a shorter depression.

the best feeling thou, is when u floor it off the line and race towards the redline...
this baby flies off the line, and continues to keep power down to the ground throughout the first 4 gears.. in 2nd i've managed to hit 100kph, and in 3rd, i've usually stopped accelerating around 140...
never really had a chance to race the car, or to give it some real go time..

as it's a new car, with barely 8000 kms i've treated it quite gently...

cheers and congrats on the new ride.

yeh i have to say it never fails to amuse me the pickup it has off the line, really throws you back into those comfy seats!

i'm going to have to start driving alittle slower especailly once my new k04 setup is installed, going to have to break it in so i can
REDLINE EVERY GEAR YEHHH!

i've brought it up to 240 going to my cottage on backroads, i ran out of space before i could go any faster, but i get nervous about deer, 2 years ago i hit a rabbit in my jetta.....the furry one...at 170...needless to say there wasnt much left, and that was while i was slowing down.

welcom sensen, here's my 2 cents on your questions.

1) not sure about the other models, but b6 and b7 have clutches where the engagement point is quite high near the top, also, if you were to wear your clutch out in our cars, the engagement point does not elevate.

2-4) there is no one correct rpm to change gears. you rev up to the rpm you require to change gears in accordance to the amount of acceleration you need.

5) practice. practice. practice. fortunately, practising is actually fun in this case.

Thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated.

Now, what about when you feel like some speed and your siting at a red light beside some d-bag with a "pimped" neon.

How high would you recommend pushing the rpm's for each gear ?

k normally i would say redline redline redline! but..it's a neon....its not worth the gas. If you really want what i would do, is just go fast enought so ur always ahead of him, while he's wot you just play with him. That's in my s4 you might have to gun it a bit.

Let me rephrase my question,
What's the highest you would reccommend pushing the rpm's without straining/damaging the engine too much?
