the lowest i've gone is 60km remaining. I usually fuel up whenever i have 1/4 tank left too.

I have gone 80 km after the 50 sign beeped. It stopped on 20km for 30 km and the car kept going and going and going.

This is why I posted about fuel tank capacity as it is not 55liters for sure as manual says, but I was ridiculed. I know that it is not 55 liters and one day I may take extra can of gas with me and drain the tank.
Fuel pump will not fail but it will be noisy for the rest of the cars life.

I can understand the "debris and gunk" comment... and I guess if that stuff gets into the fuel pump it could possibly ruin it - but I dont see how simply running out of fuel could cause problems with a fuel pump.

Im any case, it was more a curiosity question, not one to spark a fight... lol

The fuel at the station pump is filtered before it hits your tank, so the risk of debris in your tank is very small, if not non existent. The fuel pump sits in the lowest part of the tank, often in an emergency sump, so it's always drawing fuel from the very bottom. The pumps I've changed over the years all have filters attached also. Then, the fuel is constantly being agitated, so anything that may have gotten past the station filters will not stay settled on the bottom. I've read that electronic fuel pumps do rely on the fuel to cool them and that routinely running the tank to very low levels could reduce their life. Don't know if this is true but would seem to make sense.

I doubt I've even gone 20km over the beep. Damn yellow can haunts my dreams. I can't see the radio station on the screen when it's there. Ok you can see it on the deck but damn you yellow can, I will obey you!

I've seen more than enough of these pumps go from running too low on fuel so this is something you want to do only under need. The fuel pump on these cars are lubricated by fuel and when they suck air they heat up very fast and the pump can be easily damaged. When you are in boost or pushing it hard through the turns you can easily push all of the fuel away from the pick-up so it is never recommended. The lowest I have ever let my car drop is to just above the start of the red zone which took just over 50 litres so there was still 10 in the tank. When I worked in automotive we found that you could run these systems dry (ie run out of fuel) about 2 - 3 times and you were buying a new pump. This is far worse than running on low fuel but it all adds up over time so don't push it too far.
