Default Help! I need to change my brakes and don't know how to do it.

I am trying to change my brakes and need help. I am changing the pads and roters (front and back). I need a detailed explanation as I have never done this before.

Assuming that this is for your B5 A4, here are a couple of DIYs: AudiWorld Tech Articles, VWvortex Forums: DIY: Front Brakes

If you're going to be doing your own maintenance, you should pick up an Audi Bentley manual, especially if you have little knowledge of automotive repair. I also highly recommend bleeding the brakes with high-quality fluid (Motul, ATE, etc.). This should be done every 2 years - it is one of the most overlooked maintenance jobs for all vehicles.

I second bleeding. Doing brakes is pretty straight forward, so i wouldnt be too scared about it. Its verry hard to mess it up

If your changing pads and rotors bleeding may not be needed. Depending of how comfortable you are with working with your breaks, you dont want to mess it up while your bleeding them, and if you've never done it before, it may be best to leave it to someone who has. But if your doing a regular break/rotor change you shouldnt have to bleed anything.

It's actually quite easy to mess up a few things when replacing pads and rotors, not cleaning or lubing the caliper guide pins properly, not getting the pad springs centered properly (can cause nasty brake sqeal), bending and inproperly re-installing the front caliper spring, not cleaning the hub to rotor contact surface causing wheel to not run true, not bedding new pads to new rotors properly, snapping bleeder screws when bleeding, etc.

The AW DIY docs posted earlier should help.
