Re: is this a good buy
did u check for the maintainence history..??
have they done a timing belt and fuel pump change after 100K
check to see if the car has been serviced regularly.
finally, what sort of warranty are u getting or is it a private sale?

This seems like a really nice deal, IMO. But my advice in buying an Audi is to assume it will need regular maintenance. So don't assume you're getting a perfect car, and budget accordingly so you can fix the little things as they come along (e.g., timing belt, control arms, heated seats, interior bits and pieces that tend to fall off). Think of is as part of the Audi "experience".

At 140,000 miles (not KM), the timing belt will need to be done again in the near future. The 2.8L is a lot more reliable than the 1.8T, engine wise. It is however, less fuel efficient.
Some things to look out for which are common on B5's:
- Check to see if the black lower door moldings (bottom of door) are falling off
- Ask if the front suspension/steering linkages have been done
- Check if the screen in the middle of the instrument cluster has dead pixels
- Make sure the sunroof switch works in ALL positions
Things you should check before buying any car:
- Make sure everything works. If it's power, make sure it works.
- Drive the car on the highway and make sure there are no strange noises/vibrations/shimmy
- Brakes
- Tires
- Parking Brake
- Fault codes
- Suspension
$4000 is about right for a 97. Check craigslist, audizine classifieds, audiworld classified, vortex classifieds. It should give you a good idea of what you can get for $4000.
My best advice, when buying a car, is to bring a friend with you. Even if they know **** all about cars, an extra pair of eyes to spot faults/issues is always good. And they'll talk you out of making stupid, impulsive decisions. I almost bought an Audi without a sunroof because I was so anxious.
