Default Get alittle more out of the 1.8t

Hello,

I have a 2001 audi a4 1.8t Manual and i want a little more out of it. Its got a stage 1 clutch and fly wheel, stage 1 chip, exhaust and some little things. My brother in law has a 1.8t jetta ( Has a 2006 S4 as well ) and it pulls a little harder then my car. It is a smaller car and only fwd, but i wouldn't mind a little more pull out of my car.

My car kinda dies a bit when i take off because of the AWD and it doesn't really throw you back until 4 to 5 grand where the turbo really kicks in. So im wondering what i can do to wake it up, but not spend a huge amount of money?

Thanks!

Since you already have a stage 1 chip, the next thing you need to do is learn how to launch your AWD car and you will have a lot better take off. When you get it right it will put you back in your seat. Head out on a back road to practice. Here is a post discussing it http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ghlight=launch. I use Mike Hood's method of launching is it works just great.

If you are looking for a little more top end on your current setup, get a test pipe. I just installed mine this weekend and it no longer runs out of breath at 5500rpm. It keeps pulling until redline. I've noticed it also spools the turbo quicker and the throttle is more responsive in the lower rpms. Well worth it for $127 bucks from ECS when they had it on sale.

One more thing you can do for free is remove the pre filter and flapper from your stock air box. When I was removing the airbox to install the test pipe, I noticed the screen inside the airbox that was clogged with bugs, and debris. That's what the filter is for. It is held in by 1 screw and is totally reversible. I also removed the flapper which is located on the bottom of the box which is also held in by 2 screws and totally reversible. Remove them and see if you can feel a difference before going out and buying a test pipe. I did both mods at the same time so I have no idea what affect one had without the other.

One more thing to check is the gap on your plugs. If you haven't changed them in a long time, change them out for a new set of your favorite plugs. I went with a colder plug this time around, NGK BKR7E with a gap of .028". I wouldn't believe if you told me but after I went from a gap of .032 to .028, there was a noticeable difference in power.

If you haven't had the recall done on your coil packs, this may be a good time to call your local dealer to see if you are covered since your car is the same year as mine. I got a notice in the mail and went in for 3 new coil packs just yesterday totally free. Anyways I hope this helps. Good luck.

Doug

I will read into that post on launching.

As well i was looking at down pipes. I want a louder car i already have a borla cat back exhaust, but i want more. I dont want to play with the cat because then i have to get a new chip for programming and problems ect.. So i was looking into down pipes. Whats the difference in down pipe and test pipe?

As well i have a after market cold air intake, KN.

Im going to look into replacing my plugs, and maybe looking into the recall.

Thanks again!

If you have an aftermarket intake, do you have a heat shield so you are not sucking in warm/hot air?

If you have a true Borla Cat Back exhaust, then you already have a downpipe. If you look in your engine bay, you will see the Cat with the O2 sensors sticking out of it. At the bottom of the Cat, there is a flange with 3 bolts. The Cat Back system "should" be bolted directly to that flange. If it isn't then the downpipe was not a part of the kit which is too bad. The most restrictive part of your car right now is your Cat unfortunately so without removing that and replacing it with a high flow cat or test pipe, you won't be able to take advantage of the horsepower you would have gained from your cat back until you open that part of the exhaust up.

Yes i made a custom heat shield that goes again the engine mounts and looks and works very well. Ill take a look today to see if i do have that down pipe or not. Ill keep you updated!
