Gasoline Esso Vs. Shell

Re: Gasoline Esso Vs. Shell
I live by a race track and see alot of high end sport cars and muscle cars and of course myself, there all going to cheap *** chevron so I would just skip esso and shell altogether and get some real octane.

Do you what they use to boost the fuel up to the 94 octane rating?
I agree with you on this. Ethanol is usually a wheat based product that is added to gasoline. Here in Canada it comprises 10% by volume. Ethanol has a lower energy output per gallon than gasoline (ethanol is 76,000 BTU/gal, gasoline is 126,000 BTU/gal).*So theoretically speaking you would have to use more ethanol to achieve the same amount of power with lesser gas, therefore you would get more mileage out of a gallon of gasoline vs a gallon of ethanol.
Octane is a hydrocarbon and octane rating is a measure of the resistance of gasoline to autoignition in our engines. Keep in mind that octane does not relate to the energy content in fuel. It is only a measure of the fuel's tendency to burn in a controlled manner, rather than exploding in an uncontrolled manner. Oil companies raise their octane rating by blending ethanol but at the same time are reducing the energy content by volume. Our cars use at least 91 octane because of the high compression which most high performance engines have. Compression is directly related to power and to thermodynamic efficiency. There is a misconception that a higher octane fuel will give you better gas mileage or more power output per gallon of gas. Since higher octane is usually achieved by blending ethanol the opposite can happen. However, using a lower octane rated fuel will reduce engine power and efficiency because of uncontrolled detonation of the fuel. Our cars have knock sensors that will send a signal to the ECU to retard ignition timing this reducing power and efficiency.
In conclusion, I would say there is no difference between 94 or 91 octane from the same station unless your car is tuned for 93 or higher and in that case the 94 octane will prevent engine knocking. Ethanol based fuels will give you less energy and gas mileage than non ethanol fuels. The difference in fuels from suppliers is the different additives and detergents they put in. You can even get slightly different fuel from the same station on different days because of the different batch that was produced.

On the other hand ethanol is a burning accelerator and it mixed with water and therefore removes it from the tank. I would say that ethanol based gas burns more completely so less of it goes out the pipe.

Re: Gasoline Esso Vs. Shell
Although ethanol does reduce the toxicity of car exhaust, it can also be very corrosive. Ethanol can absorb water and dirt very easily, and if those contaminants are not filtered out successfully, they can cause damage and corrosion inside the engine block.

Re: Gasoline Esso Vs. Shell
I've put chevron 94 in my car from new, now has 90000kms(no problems running awesome) but researching on what mikeh said I'm going try the v-power and I"ll post the results.
