Re: engine interchangeability???
The engine from an automatic and manual are the same engine. You will have to take the flywheel and torque converter off of the old engine and put it on the new engine but the engines themselves are the same.

Re: engine interchangeability???
I found that out the hard way myself.
You need to get an automatic crank for any B6 1.8T, the manual crankshaft will not fit, you can always pull out the crank and swap it for another.
Good Luck.

Re: engine interchangeability???
I could stand corrected. The cranks are different? its the first time i have heard about an auto manufacture changing cranks based on the driveline. Seems like an extra cost that would not be needed.

May be there is something to do about that situation, wit out changind the cranks ???

Re: engine interchangeability???
well if it is in fact that the cranks bolt pattern is different, then there is not much you can do unless someone like APR makes an aftermarket flywheel that bolts to the automatic crank...
im interested more so now that audi makes a different crank for the same engine...i will see what else i can find for you.
Maybe veedubbing69 will be able to sheed more light on the situation.

The part of the crank where the pilot busing sits for the manual transmission is WAY smaller and sticks out from the engine. The crank for the automatic torque converter has a way bigger pilot bushing orfice and sits almost flush with the rear main seal.
You will NOT be able to interchange crankshafts on the AMB engines.
Don't possibly stand corrected, just phone the dealer and ask. Most of the poeple on these sites don't know anything about anything, don't take my word for it.
Good luck.

I want to update this thread in case anyone finds it in a search and references it.
Veedubin69 is incorrect, as is any dealership that you ask - you can in fact swap 1.8T engines between manual and automatic cars. Mating a manual engine to an automatic transmission will require you to machine down the spigot on the crankshaft, which will allow the automatic transmission to bolt right on. Mating an automatic engine to a manual transmission gives you a couple of options: 1.) Buy an adapter for the auto crank and the manual transmission will bolt right on; 2.) machine down the crank spigot and press in the appropriate sized pilot bearing for the manual transmission input shaft.
You can also swap the cranks, but the above options are relatively simple.
