Broken A4

Broken A4
Just bought a 99 A4 with a dead motor.
When I pulled the timing cover off I found the belt to be ok. So I decided to check compression, #3,4 had nothing. So out comes the motor. What a pain that was!
When I removed the pan I found two broken rods and a ventilated block. The block is actually broken where the oil pump drive and the distrib. drive shaft mesh. Its really hard to tell what broke first. This car has no mods on it and looks to be well maintained, no sludge in the pan nor in the cyl. head.
Two broken rods seems kind of odd to me, are the rods just junk in these cars?
This is the first Audi I have owned, I used to be an awd Mazda guy, but the cars are just too rare now.
So if anyone has some ideas, please let me know.
Also I'm now looking for a block and crank!
