Default Advise on Ignition Coils

Hey Guys,

I have been experiencing rough idling lately, and when my mechanic pulled the cords there misfires on some of the cylinders. The spark plugs were replaced last year, so I am guessing the ignition coils are going bad.

Being a 99 B5, it does not have any recalls for ignition coils, I checked this with Agin court as well.

Audi is quoting 100 a piece for the ignition coils and my mechanic said he can get it for 40 a piece. But on the Internet I have found a set of 4 for 80 - 100 bucks.

My question is, what do I have to look out for when buying ignition coils for my 99 B5 A4. Do I have to get the OEM specific ones or any generic ones that match the connector will do ?

If you guys have any recommendations I would appreciate your response.

Thanks

It really comes down to quality, a lot of the knock-offs will not last as long and tend to have problems sooner than OEM. Try a VW parts shop that sells OEM parts and see if they can get them for cheaper than what Audi wants. Typically most Audi dealers bump the list price from suggested by 10% - 15% so you can usually find better deals from other shops but look for quality over price. I've never had problems with the coils so I have never taken the time to look into the details so hopefully someone else has had more first hand experience with these and can help out.

Are these coils generic across the A4 models, as in can I buy coils for a different year and use it on my 99, or do I have to look for coils intended for the 99 AEB engine ?

I found plenty of good deals for coils intended for different year models, like 2000, 2001...etc.

Has any one dealt with FCPGroton (Volvo Parts, BMW Parts, European Car Parts | FCPGroton.com) ?

I found a set of 4 for 120 with shipping

unfortunately, from what i read, you need the ones specifically for the AEB engine (i think these are the only ones that bolt down), and it looks like they are the most expensive ones. here is a link to the coils at ecstuning

OEM / Performance Parts for Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mini, Porsche & Volkswagen - ECS Tuning

just a side note, i always carry an extra coilpack in my trunk, just in case, because you never know when one might go. i have done this since when i owned my passat with 1.8T engine. it has saved my a$$ twice so far.

You know, I have never carried any tools or parts in my cars over the years and I have never had a problem to date. I think it has been about 4 - 5 years since I have even had a spare tire or jack in my Corrado and no problems. I don't gamble in real life but I certainly roll the dice with the car but so far so good. On top of that I don't have BCAA or any roadside either because I just found that I was giving them money year after year with no returns. The one time I did need BCAA when a clutch slave failed they said the car was too low and I ended up paying someone else to bring it back home.

There are several different versions that bolt down, but the AEB coils are specific to those heads. They are essentially the same coils, but the rubber boot that goes over the sparkplug is slightly different. +1 on keeping spare coils around - these things are notorious for failing!

I ordered the Ignition coils from FCP Groton. Once I receive the coils I will update you guys.

These guys are really quick in processing and shipping. I placed the order yesterday and I am expecting to be delivered tomorrow.

The shipping was 23 dollars flat. Not sure if this includes our HST prepaid, will know when I accept delivery.

Any one in the forum an ASE certified technician ?

For warranty purposes these coils needs to be installed by an ASE certified technician

Where is TO do you live. I bought my A6 from SR Automotive and they have a guy that is cert for Audi's. Here is their address. 106 Selet Ave. unit 9. The guys name is John. 416-609-9157. I'm not vouching for this guy but he did the timing belt and water pump on mine (included when I bought it) and seamed to know his stuff. I think he used to work for Pfaff Audi before opening his own place. You could try him out his shop rate is $70/ hour.

Hey Guys,

The coils came in on Thursday.

While going to replace the coils, when I was unscrewing the two nuts that were holding down one of the ignition coils, I stripped and broke the two nuts.

Does the coil need to be bolted down. After replacing the coil I was able to drive. My question is is it OK to leave it unbolted or do I have to find a way to bolt it down ?

If so what are my options here ?
