Default ABS or no ABS - this is the Question

What is faster for stopping on black ice, slam the brakes to the bottom and activate ABS or just touch them lightly?

Both options you have given are quite similar. When the ABS is activated, it prevents the wheels from locking that could cause you to skid. Same thing when you press the brake lightly but firm. You are slowing down the wheels to a stop.

But if I had to choose, I would slowly press on the brakes. Not so to stop as fast, but to keep control of your car.

And this is what I do - I slowly press the brakes, because my ABS is not sensitive enough to stop me in time.
In contrast the ABS on my VOLVO 960 (pardon my French) is very nice. I slam it and it reacts right away bringing the car to a nice stop.

Is AUDI's ABS a cheap ONE, or is it for a purpose?

If you need more brake power, prior to stopping on black ice ,tap your brake pedal all the way down quickly 3 to 5 times, than stop.

The car will be in different mode for approx 30 seconds.

this will engage a new super braking mode.

Remember that ABS (and pumping the brake for that matter) is not necessarily intended to help you stop faster (at a shorter distance). It is intended to give you more steering control.

Each time the brakes "pump" it allows you to turn the car to avoid objects, like the car in front of you.

Locking up the brakes solid will just result in an uncontrolled slide.

Dear Elevation;

This is my notice of apology to you for my post. I never intended to post what I did.

In fact I had a 1988 Jetta with 1.8 engine and I liked it. The best I liked the fuel economy and acceleration.

Sincerely

Adam
