Thumbs down '99 A4 rough drive, please help'

Well, This is the situation.

Recently purchased a 1999 A4 1.8T automatic. The fellow said it was 'parked for 6 months while I was in Florida'. I made a mistake by not driving it (just listening to engine after he had boosted it). Told me 'just needs fuel injection flush' etc. we figured battery as well. we really needed a car, I really wanted an Audi and took his word on this 'as is'...I know I know bad idea (please don't remind me)...

So, took to Cdn Tire...after this that it was idling very low about 500rpm...he ordered a MAF sensor thinking that's the issue...it helped keep the car on and let it drive ( although he did drive it before changing it also after capping some tube and tightening another)...it drives very bad, impossible. Revs to 2000 4 times before changing gears then FLIES up to 5000 and BAM into next gear then completely gets cut out and you are scared to not get rear ended and put on your hazards.....

I made him remove the 300$ Bosch MAF and new battery and its sitting there. He could not get a computer reading and said both his computers are not 'communicating with the a4's'...??

He believes either 1. Computer needs fixing or replacing 2. Transmission needs replacing or 3. Both and worse

Now...I was thinking to either 1. Take to a dealer or Pfaff motors and get it diagnosed (thoroughly) biting the $139 for 1 hr...then deciding..

Or is this a major crap shoot sink hole and for someone who really can't afford to spend a lot... Take the "honest" sellers offer to give me HALF of what I paid to take it back so he can take it to his mechanic and scrap or fix it..ya I asked for my money back because I had to...

How much is new CPU? Or used trans? I don't think trans is feasible for me...too much.....

PLEASE advise for your experiences ....?

I had it diagnosed at Audi...they said 1. Fuse? Behind stereo was not allowing computer reading ( and stereo was not working 2. Throttle valve needs replacing and 'there may be issues with the trans' ... But they want to do those first Approximate $750 fix ;/

If anyone was wondering...

Is it possible just the valve of a throttle body can be replaced or (not possible?) easier to change throttle body? I have seen SMS on ebay

mine hesitate when i put any load on the engine. either when i accelerate, or having AC causes the engine to misfire. I'm betting its my spark plugs.

If by CEL you mean 'check engine light' than no. The engine seemed perfect sounding when fiddled with (reved manually by hand under the hood)...

Get it hooked up to a vagcom and start pulling codes, just because you have no indicators in your cluster doesn't mean you're not throwing any codes.

Your biggest mistake was buying a car without driving it, wtf?
