Unhappy '99 A4 2.8 Sounds like plane when started (air pump?)

Please help! I have a 99 Audi A4 2.8L, tiptronic that almost every time I start it sounds like a jet engine taking off. I was told by a mechanic that it is my air pump that kicks on to help warm up my engine but it is unbelievably noisy. Sometimes this pump comes on when I am driving as well (although not often). It will stay on initially for about a minute then shut off. I also have an ABS light that is flashing with the parking light. Could this be an abs pump or is it the air pump? I know others that have audis and this isn't normal. Please help as this has been going on for a long while.

Pretty common problems - the secondary air injection pump (SAI) is plastic and splits open as the plastic becomes brittle. Replacement is pretty quick. For the ABS check the obvious stuff like brake fluid level/pads/ABS wheel sensors first, otherwise you likely need the ABS module repaired. Getting codes via VCDS will help identify problems in that area.

Search for ABS Module Repair Toronto - there is some someone their who repairs those things. I've also seen a company named Modulemaster pop up in various threads on other forums.

Thanks for your input. I will check the secondary pump. The one problem with the ABS issue is that for some reason my car will not communicate with the computer to bring up codes. Does that mean that the ABS module is causing this? Thanks!

if you have the lights on, then look and see if its a B5.
you're a 99, yep, its the ABS Module.

fairly easy to replace, its just finding one or getting yours sent out.

I just had this, and I found one in a Parts 2001 A6 with the 2.8 (same ABS module as ours) for $200 and just swapped em.

For the Secondary pump just bite the bullet and see what the stealership has.

Thanks! I found Cheap-ABS.com online and read some reviews and it looks pretty legit for repairing ABS modules. I just shipped my ABS module to Virginia to have it repaired so I hope it works.

Do you know where I can get instructions on how to remove the air pump myself?

Thanks! I sent out my ABS module to Cheap-Abs online (Matt Mallory) was his name and he repaired it, sent it back and voila the lights are now gone.
