Weird issue 2000 A4 v6

I had a weird situation with my car yesterday.

The car wouldnt start after I had driven it for about 30 min, and then parked for about 2 min.

It started again after a few attempts, but the "Check Engine" light was on. As I accelarated I could hear a clicking noise for the first 50-60 feet

Anyway, I took the car to Canadian Tire, who said they would charge me $85 to see why the check engine light had come on..which I declined because I thought I'd buy one of those OBD readers for 20-30 bucks on ebay.

As I got some fuel(the highest grade, I normally put in the medium grade), I put a bottle of fuel cleaner in there as well.Since then, the engine light went off but the car misses sometimes when idling.

I'm still concerned if its a serious problem.

I'm a newbie, and I'm wondering if someone can help figure this out.

Without seeing the engine code , can't tell much,
but I am assuming you were putting 89 octane? knock sensor sends info to ECU to retard the ignition and engine will not run at full power, and it will starve for octane, I wouldn't run continuesly on mid grade fuel..
where are you located..

I'm in the Toronto area, and you are right in assuming that I usually put in 89...but I pop in a bottle of fuel cleaner once in a while.

I'll be on the higher grade for sometime now until fuel prices go crazy again.

I am right now in Mississauga, if you want came and check your engine code then email me at audivwfirst@gmail.com
Another issue regards the click noise does it happens everytime you run the car in the morning or if the car is sitting for pre-long time ..
there is oil pump which is use to pump oil to the top of the engine, and it helps to lubricate the valves at the start, this could be an indication of weakning pump
try next time to change to different oil viscosity thinner.. this could help

Thanks for the help, the check engine light has now gone.

However, Do I need to change the 'oil viscosity thinner' when I get an Oil change? Is a filter or a lube of some sort.
