engine revs and is not stable when first turned on

Does anybody know what would cause my engine to rev up and down when you come to a quick stop or when first turning on the engine after a few hours??? it has been doing this for a few months and i would like to figure out what it is..

also, any information on when to change trasmission oil???

every 8k you should change your oil. It revs up because the car is cold it revs at about 1200 and staiblalizes down to 850-900. during warm up it might go below and above those numbers but once it becomes stable it stays around 900. Do not rev the **** out of the engine to warm it up faster. Who ever does this is an idiot! You can crack a whole bunch of stuff

He's asking about how often to change the tip tranny oil. There's no official change interval as they sell it as a 'lifetime' fluid. But the bottle the fluid comes in is stamped with a 3 year expiration date, so that's definitely a starting point!

Mine has 120,000 km on it and I plan to change it in the next 10,000 km.

any idea of the price to change the tranny oil??
Also, im not talking about reving to warm up, it happens when you come to a quick stop, or when the rpm goes from high to low very very quickly.. the engine will start to jump until you put it in neutral and rev the engine..

The weirdness with throttle at idle could be a dirty throttle body. Not hard to clean - check out: taligentx.com: Passat - Throttle Body Cleaning (note our car is DBW (drive by wire), so pay attention to that part).

You might also just need a throttle body adaptation (easy to do - search around).

Regarding TIP Trans fluid change, Audi says fluid is lifetime. Trans Experts also say the fluid is lifetime... meaning when the Trans fails from never changing the fluid, you need a new Trans.

I plan on replacing TIP Trans Fluid every 100K to 125K KM's with OEM Audi Fluid.

Note that fluid volume is influenced by temperature and a proper fill procedure takes this into account. On my two 01V tranmsissions, a fluid pump with hooked extension tube is needed to fill trans from bottom of trans. Getting the Fluid level perfect may take a few tries and has to be checked near operating temperature. Bentley has procedures documented.

Also note that the 01V was used on many cars, B5 A4 / S4's, C5 A6's, etc. Audi issued a Technical Service Bulletin stating the Trans Oil Pan bolts loosen up over time and cause a trans fluid drip. If left unchecked, Trans Fluid level will go down and Trans can fail early. If your dripping trans fluid, try tightening the pan bolts to factory spec as it eliminated my slow drip.

my car was doing the same thing, would just randomly rev up sometimes when I was sitting at the lights, people thought I was trying to race them or something. Also had trouble starting it... once every 2 weeks or so. Anyways, turns out I had shorted a temp sensor. What was happening was the car was reading the temp all over the map, so it was trying to adjust for this by giving the engine more or less fuel based on this. Hope that helps. Oh yea, it was an easy fix, spent 70 to get it done.

Check the thermostat, our cars adjust revs based on engine temps. Especially if you're seeing wonky temp gauge behavior then that could be your culprit.
