clutch release postion
 

OK, I dont actually own this car yet, its my dads. ever since he got it though iv noticed that the clutch pedal engages the clutch very high up. does anyone have this problem, is it common? i'm also pretty sure that he needs a new clutch very soon, and i think the pedal has gotten worse because of that.

Audi does have a high clutch release. Having said that has the clutch ever been replaced, looked at etc. How many miles are on the car? Is the clutch slipping now? What make you think he needs a new clutch?

to be honest, i always thought he needed a new clutch becuase of how high it ingaged. now the car has 260 000 and you can feel it vibrate when engaging and it has never been replaced. im going to be getting this car in the fall because he would rather spend money on buying or leasing a newer cheaper car for a year or two then buy something nice again or replacing the clutch. Im a mechanic apprentice (3rd year) so i can do the clutch for a lot less money then him. he's got a 05 corvette for a fun car so getting rid of the audi isnt a big deal.

my other question is, has anyone succesfully adjusted the clutch pedal so that it engages a little sooner?

as was said, the clutch pedals do engage very high on these cars... my first couple audis i thought needed new clutches!
that said, on my B6 A4, i did need to change the clutch, so i went aftermarket, and got a Valeo clutch and Valeo single mass flywheel... decent performance, and the engagement position was much nicer... but, the clutch pedal was also much lighter (some may like it, some not). many ppl recommend the Clutchmasters FX300. i hear it is a great clutch for this car.

Yeah. I was wondering if an aftermarket would be able to make the pedal better. That's good to know. Thanks for the info.

It does sound like you need a new clutch - as you know, the disc wears and engagement doesn't start until the nearly all of the pressure is off the pressure plate. I would also not reuse the dual-mass flywheel when you change the clutch. Assuming that you have a 1.8T, a mild clutch upgrade is nice and may be needed if you decide to do some bolt-ons. A single-mass flywheel on the 1.8T will chatter, so you should take that into consideration. A Fluidampr will eliminate most of the chatter. If you do move to a SMFW, be sure to get a clutch disc with a sprung hub.

You can modify the clutch travel in the A4s by adjusting the length of the pushrod in the clutch slave cylinder; although, I would not do that to compensate for a worn clutch disc - it's more of a you-don't-like-the-engagement-point-of-your-new-clutch kind of thing, so that you can tailor it to your preference.

its a 2.8, do the 2.8's have a dual mass flywheel?
