All I can say is that I have installed and used 250W 4x6 patch heaters exclusively for years with no problems. I have never seen a warped oil pan on an Audi or VW from a normally functional patch heater.
The only issues to worry about with the patch heaters are to clean the mating surface when installing and silicone seal the edges to prevent corrosion from settling in between the heater and the pan, as well as periodically check the heater for serious road impacts that can physically damage the heater.

Go to the dealer in Edmonton. I was there last week and had one installed, they charged an hour of labour for it. The parts counter will not sell one to you to take home because they've had problems in the past with people installing them wrong and burning down garages. I'm sure you could buy something similar from Canadian Tire, but I was happy to pay $130 to avoid crawling around under my car in the freezing cold.

I just dont know why everyone is so concerned about these. You guys do know that if Audi deemed them necessary they would be put on. The Audi is already built and designed for our weather conditions, and this just simply adds weight to your vehicle IMO. If it was necessary it would have been on the car, and if it was a requirement or a way to make money Audi would make one as an OEM part that you can buy. I would suggest you guys research the topic a little more before you go out there and spend all sorts of money due to the the fact that you have been misinformed by just some Canadian Tire guy.

i also live in the second coldest place on earth yesterday (as per the weather reports)... no block heater, (as what the audi dealer advised me), left my car out in the morning at work, 8 hours after, it started at 1 try no problems at all.
