1998 a4 1.8T: What is a normal interval to top off my oil?
I was wondering what is considered normal, to see if I have any issues. I usually top off a quartz about ~1600km. Also what oil should I be using? I have read anywhere from 5W-30 to 5W-50. I currently use 5W-40.
Depending how far you go between oil changes it is quite normal to top up between. In my 4.2 S4 I usually have to top up a litre between changes and those happen at around the 8K mark.
Hope that helps.

i change my oil every 7k.
the only times i had to top off were when i had leaks.
once was a gasket, once was the little breather hose.

I agree with KF. I change my oil every 5K and never had to top up. As a matter of fact, minimal loss of oil when i drain it out. Now, if you are driving the car hard, it wouldnt be strange that you would have to top up the oil.
My buddy and I beat the crap out of a 2003 Porsche Turbo when we had it for 2 weeks and we were topping up oil in it daily...lol.
As for which oil, I use the same one as dealerships. Castrol Syntec 5-40.

ya it depends on how you drive... i took my car out once on an empty parking lot with fresh snow to do some donuts. had it on 1st gear for a while, so i had to top oil afterwards
