Default Noob Interrested in A3

Hi

I'm interested in getting an A3. I want to purchase a used one though. Do you guys have any suggestions or opinions to which version between 2006 and 2008 are the best to purchase used? I'm also thinking about getting the 3.2 Quattro version, is it better than the 2.0 T? If someone could go all in and explain me about all these differences, that'd be great.

I don't own one, but this is what I know.

2.0T is the 4 cyl turbo. FWD only, but you can get a manual gearbox or DSG Gearbox
3.2 is the 6 cyl n/a engine. You can get quattro but only the DSG gear box, no manual.

If you want a used one get one from the dealer since you'll get a warranty with it. Good luck. I hope this info was helpful.

Just bought a slightly used 2010 A3 2.0T Quattro but its not my first Audi. The 2.0T is a good engine and has more potential with modding if you wish. The 3.2 is an old design 2 valve engine and has been dropped. I hear that they don't feel faster and along with the Quattro are much heavier. I wanted the Quattro but with winter tires the FWD car would still be great. I'll probably put winter tires on anyway as the car won't stop any quicker with Quattro. I did alot of shopping and almost bought an '06 2.0T and 08 2.0T FWD. The '08 was an extra $5K but had warranty left. Both had around 48 to 56K. Tough call. As with all cars, go with the newest one you can afford. Good luck!

thx for the advice!

But im confused, you said you were almost convinced on getting either an 06 2.0T or 08 2.0T but don't these versions come without quattro? They began putting quattro on 09's right? Like for me, the ony reason I want to get the 3.2 is because it comes stock with everything I want except maybe the bi-xenon? I dont want to mod the audi though just switch the rims when its summer, tint the windows and a couple of other minor stuff here and there. I did want to put a turbo in the 3.2 but then I heard i'd have to take care of it and pay lots of money etc...
My only concern about the 2.0T is that if I buy it used, I have to be careful because I dont want a used Turbo thats been abused. Any advice on that?
Lastly, is there a button to turn the turbo off?

Yes, the older 2.0Ts were all FWD and not Quattro. I eventually held out for a newer 2.0T Quattro. I would always get a PPI done (pre-purchase inspection) on any used car. An Audi dealer can do this. The turbos cannot be turned on/off. Its really just an integral part of the engine. One issue the early A3s had was failed ignition coils. This would likely be very noticeable and have been fixed on warranty anyway. There were also some complaints about the way the DSG transmissions shifted when taking off. A test drive will tell you if there are any issues here. As always, a car that has warranty left or an extended warranty is worth a bit more to me.

OK I hear a lot about the 2.0T, but what about the 3.2 v6? Any one of you own one? How is it compared to the 2.0T? I need an automatic transmission with the DSG, which is why I'm thinking about the 3.2 and since it comes stock with almost everything, I figured I'd be better off with it. I'm not a speed freak either so it doesn't really matter if the 3.2 isn't that much faster than the 2.0T. I live in Montreal and there's a whole lot of snow, how is the FWD on the 2.0's in winter? I'm 23 and when I purchased my first car 5 years ago, I made a huge mistake, that's why I'm looking and asking for plenty advice this time. lastly, besides the 3.2 being thirsty, what are the pros and cons of the 3.2? Better yet, comparisons between 2.0T and 3.2? I'm not looking into modding the motor or anything, just keeping the car simple with only minor adjustments.

(I'm looking into the 06,07 and 08 models only)

I haven't driven a 3.2 so all I can say is that it would be heavier and likely not handle quite as well as the 2.0T. If you put on proper winter tires the FWD will be nearly as good as AWD. That said, I think many people buy Audi for the Quattro specifically. I would try and drive both and see what you think. I missed a couple of 3.2 cars (2007s) that were about $28-30K asking so never got to test drive them. The 2.0T has plenty of power for me.
