Default Engine noise during standstill or neutral

Hi guys! I own an 06 A3 2.0 TFSI manual transmission. I am concerned of how the engine sounds right now. I don't really know how to describe it but the best way i can put it into words is that it sounds like one of those jetta deisel engines. Its like rattling or something. Especially when its in neutral. Any suggestions on how to fix this or if this is really a problem? Thanks in advance!

Is there oil around the oil cap?
Usually that ticking sound is the pcv. Im fairly certain its the rear one(silver tube/hose near turbo- correct me if im wrong) and i think the part is around $60... It could be the front one, only reason i say rear is i deleted the front one off my car and its still doing it.

If the rattling noise goes away when you depress the clutch pedal, it's the DMFW; if the noise continues with the clutch depressed, start looking at your valvetrain, namely the cam chain tensioner. Note that the latter can cause complete engine failure, so get it diagnosed ASAP!

I have the same issue with my 06. Everyone comments on how it sounds like a diesel. I asked the dealer & he said its "normal".???

Read my previous post; and, take your car to a mechanic who cares enough to look into it.

Chuck, can we assume that your engine has just recently started making this noise? If so, find a shop that knows what they're doing. I don't know GTA all that well, but I would start at H2Sport in Georgetown. I've also heard good things about Independent Tuning.

I always assumed this sound is normal since it's direct injection. You might want to consider the PCV, since it's an easy fix, and probably a good one if you haven't already, especially since you A3 is an '06.

You might also want to consider replacing your engine mounts, I have yet to try this myself, but will do before the winter kicks in.

Thanks everfresh. I was thinking of the same thing too. I was searching the net and this thing came up:

BSH-2.0T-FSI-PCV-Revamp

Just search it on google. I cant post URLs yet as i dont have at least 5 posts. Do you think this is advisable? I asked an experienced Audi mechanic (who is strictly stock Audi enthusiast) and he said it might turn on some lights. I didn't want that to risk anything so i thought maybe i can bring it up here in the forum. What's your take on this?

It's not necessary to buy the BSH PCV. Audi has a new revised version of the PCV, so if you change it, your actually getting an improved model compared to the one you have now.

Same goes for the diverter valve... If you decide to chip your car, it's probably a good idea to get the latest diverter valve from Audi, it's much more durable than the one you have now.
