As for the vinyl its something i have been debating too, but I have seen awesome jobs with vinyl wrap.. So its something I plan to get done for my A3..
Sorry, but your interpretation of the tire numbers is wrong.

235/45/17

235 is the "section width" of the tire, ie side to side, left to right, in mm.

45 is the "aspect ratio" of the sidewall height to the width( aspect ratio = sidewall height / section width), so sidewall height in mm = aspect ration x section width = 45 x 235 for your tires. For our cars, you ideally wanted 235/40/17 (which is the closest 235 width tire to the original 225/45/17), the extra approximately 10mm=1cm on each side of your tire is a huge difference, and probably respnsible for hte rubbing. You are actually wearing an extra 2cm in tire diameter! (1cm per side).

17 is the outside diameter of the wheel itself in inches.

If you don't believe me, as I'm sure some won't, go and research the meaning of the numbers here:

(URL removed - oops! I can't post urls cause I don't have 5 posts yet, but canadian tire's website has a good explanation on it)

And to verify it, go and measure the height and width of your tires and compare it to the sidewall markings. Your tires are not 23.5cm in circumference, or 4.5cm (or 45cm, if you read it that way) wide!
