Hi there,
I have a horrible brake noise coming from my rear brakes. It's been happening for the last 6000km. the weather is not a factor. The dealership claims it's all 'normal' and won't do a thing. What do you suggest?
M.

Hey it would help if you posted what you drive! But I am guessing it is an A3 Because this is very common in the A3's, what happens is the breaks get a "glaze" to them on the rotors and the brake pads, as this occurs it tends to squeal a lot, also sometimes because of dust and recoks get in there that this might occur so I would highly suggest taking your car down to a car wash and with a high pressure washer blast the brake's front and rear, to eliminate one problem, but make sure you go very easy on the brakes to the car wash. If they get too hot and you wash them with cold water it can cause cracking etc. so be on the safe side and let them cool of a bit before you do wash them. i would say try to get it from every angle spending about a minute at each wheel. Now for the second part the "glazing" issue I guess the simple way of describing it is taking two pieces of glass and rubbing it against one another, not much grip right? well the rotors should be that way but the brake pads should be sand paper like right? Glazing occurs when the brakes get too hot and sand down the brake pads to a complete smooth finish, as well as the rotors! I guess you can think of it as a "coating on the brakes" to fix this problem is to take your car to an empty parking lot or a remote area with no traffic, and drive your car like it was stolen. Speed up to 80-60km/h and then slow down to 10km/h make sure you do not stop completely in this procedure because t will start to glaze the brakes again. do this about 4 times over all in one shot and then park the car as quick as you can and let the brakes cool off completely, without using the E-brake just if its an auto put it in park if its a manual put it into neutral and sit in the car for about 10 minutes on a cold day! This will fix your problem! Enjoy! Let me know how it works for ya!

Hi,
Sorry yes I do drive 2007 A3. Thanks for the message. I tried a similar thing - speeding up and braking. THe problem will go away for a few moments or maximum of one day. As you see, I would have to do such braking a lot. Well, I'll try again. Should I just change brake pads to ceramic ones? Should I also change the rotors? Thanks for your help!

Are you here in calgary locally? I can take look, and ask my friend thats a mechanic @ the audi dealer to take a look at it, but my suggestion would be to go to a local brake shop and ask them if you can speak to a mechanic that can take it for a test drive with you to see what he thinks! There might be some product out there that we arent aware of. But ultametly I would leave it as my last resort to change the brake pads and rotors! But you gotta do what you gotta do right

The noise is high pitch, I guess metal to metal. Sometimes is shorter but most of the times it is a long and loud squeal.

and respond to 1move - yes I'm in calgary
