Audi launches new fuel-efficient A3 and A4 models




Audi is expanding the range of its two highest selling models with the introduction of its ‘e’ series models for the A3 and A4. The new ‘e’ tag designates the car’s high efficiency drivetrain, similar to Honda’s ‘LEV’ (Low Emission Vehicle) badging. The range includes the A3, A3 Sportback 1.9 TDI e and A4 2.0 TFSI e in saloon or Avant guise coming in both gasoline and diesel variants with the latest direct injection technology.
Further improving fuel economy is a gearshift indicator located in the instrument cluster that indicates optimal gear changes, analyzing the situation according to current engine load and speed. Other enhancements include weight reduction measures such as the aluminum bonnet and low-rolling-resistance 16in wheels and tires. The engine electronics have also been tuned to give particularly good fuel consumption.
The A4 2.0 TFSI e manages just 7.1L of fuel per 100km, while the A3 with the 1.9 TDI engine achieves a hybrid-beating 4.5L per 100km with CO2 emissions below the EU’s original 120g/km proposal. At this rate, you could drive up to 1,200km on a single tank of fuel. Audi is also offering lessons for customers on how to drive efficiently, but the program is currently limited to Germany only.
