German premium car maker Audi (NSUG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) on Friday launched production of a convertible version of its A3 vehicle at the firm's Hungarian plant.
Audi declined to provide planned output figures for the new car, but said its predecessor, the A3, had sold over 1.8 million units worldwide.
The first new A3 rolled off the assembly line during a ceremonial start of production in Gyor, Audi's Hungarian plant, attended by Audi AG Chairman Rupert Stadler and Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany.
Besides Audi's TT and TT Roadster sports cars, this will be the third model to be assembled in Hungary.
"Audi Hungaria has a proven track record over the past several years with production of the Audi TT Coupe and the TT Roadster," Stadler said.
"We are confident that production of the A3 Cabriolet will significantly contribute to our strategic goal of making 1.5 million cars a year by 2015," he said.
Audi's Hungarian unit plans to manufacture 50,000 cars this year, but it declined comment on how many of the new A3 models this would include.
Audi Hungaria, one of Hungary's biggest exporters, made 23,675 cars and 1.9 million engines last year.
