Default AC Compressor Failure

what is it with the AC compressor systems in these cars?

I picked up my 2.0t late last summer, the ac worked fine - went through winter... got a warm spring day and - no ac.

Dropped at dealer - service tech says they have to replace the compressor - he claims that more often than not, the systems are over-charged from the factory and if it's not corrected at the importing/setup dealership it can cause premature failure.

Does this sound right to anybody?

hello Bakespot

no, I have not heard of AC compressor problem. In a few weeks, I gona to my dealer for the first oil change, so I'll ask him if it's true or not.
I will have several questions to ask for him, but I'd like to ask them first in this forum to find out if someone noticed these problems.
when you push the button to activate the quick ventilation for the windshield, is what in the maximum ventilation or it is still 1 bar before reaching the end?

The only thing I have heard about VW/ Audi and A/c is that it will NEVER have problems, I'm sure nothing is 100% but brobably 98% of these cars will not experience issues with a/c. Supposed to be rock solid (not like the turbos)

My last Jetta (bought new in 2000) had a compressor problem at delivery, it was overfilled and the safety was kicking in and stopping the AC from working properly. Was promptly ajusted by dealer under waranty. Since then I drove the car for the past 8 years + 350 000 kms and the AC is still going strong!

But my brother in law had to replace his last month on his 2002 jetta wagon... 1000$ work

So just hope for the best as mechanic is mechanic!

A new compressor may be needed if the unit is leaking internally or not producing enough pressure due to bad reed valves, worn piston rings, or worn or scored cylinders, etc.). A worn compressor or one with internal problems will not be able to develop normal operating pressures with a full charge of refrigerant. This kind of problem can be diagnosed with an A/C gauge set.

Loss of lubrication is unquestionably the most common cause of compressor failure. This can happen when there is a refrigerant leak somewhere in the system that allows refrigerant and oil to escape. Typical leak points are hoses, hose and pipe connections (O-rings and flange gaskets), the evaporator, condenser or the compressor shaft seal. An electronic leak detector or dye should be used to find the leak so it can be repaired.

2007 A3. Failure occurred after 2 years, 17,000 miles. Audi dealer says they have been having problems with a/c compressor failures. Had to wait 2 weeks for "new design" compressor to be shipped from Germany. I am supposedly the first in California to get one. Car is in the shop over night as they need to flush the system completely to remove metal fragments!
